Prayagraj Airport: A Modern Gateway for Maha Kumbh 2025
Prayagraj Airport is undergoing a significant transformation under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu. This modernization aims to accommodate the expected influx of devotees during the grand Maha Kumbh Mahotsav, scheduled from January 13 to February 26, 2025. With extensive expansion efforts, the airport is set to become a modern gateway to the city, known for its rich culture and spiritual significance.
Major Expansion Efforts Underway
The expansion of Prayagraj Airport is a result of meticulous planning and coordination among various stakeholders. On December 8, 2024, Minister Ram Mohan Naidu conducted a thorough review of the terminal expansion and construction progress. He issued time-bound directives to ensure that all projects are completed on schedule. Regular inspections and meetings with state authorities, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS), and Airports Authority of India (AAI) have been crucial in maintaining momentum.
On January 9, 2025, Minister of State Murlidhar Mohol also reviewed the progress at the airport. The focus has been on enhancing traveler amenities and ensuring that the airport can handle the increased passenger volume expected during the Maha Kumbh. The airport is currently connected to 17 cities across India, a significant increase from just eight cities in December 2024. With the introduction of 81 new flights in January 2025, Prayagraj Airport is now a well-connected hub for devotees traveling from various parts of the country.
Increased Flight Capacity and Connectivity
To facilitate the sacred journey of millions, Prayagraj Airport has introduced a total of 132 flights, offering approximately 80,000 monthly seats. This increase in capacity is essential for accommodating the large number of pilgrims expected during the Maha Kumbh. The airport now boasts direct and connecting flights to 26 cities, including Srinagar and Visakhapatnam, making it easier for devotees to reach their destination.
In response to the anticipated surge in passenger numbers, airlines have been advised to maintain reasonable airfares. The DGCA has instructed carriers to ensure sufficient capacity, especially during peak days of the festival, such as the Shahi Sanan on January 29 and February 3, as well as other significant dates like February 4, 12, and 26. Akasa Air plans to operate flights from Ahmedabad and Bangalore, adding approximately 4,000 seats, while SpiceJet will connect Prayagraj with major cities like Delhi, Chennai, and Mumbai, contributing around 43,000 additional seats in February 2025.
Modernization and Enhanced Passenger Experience
The modernization of Prayagraj Airport includes a substantial expansion of the terminal area, which has grown from 6,700 square meters to 25,500 square meters. This expansion allows the airport to handle a peak-hour capacity of 1,080 passengers, up from 540. A new terminal has been operationalized to accommodate an additional 1,620 passengers. Parking capacity has also increased from 200 to 600 vehicles, and the number of check-in counters has risen from 8 to 42.
Passenger comfort has been a priority in this transformation. The airport now features lounges, a child care room, and an increase in boarding bridges from 2 to 6. Food and beverage counters have been expanded, including the introduction of the UDAN Yatri Cafe for affordable dining options. New services, such as meet-and-greet assistance for differently-abled individuals and prepaid taxi counters, have been implemented to enhance the travel experience. Medical facilities have also been improved, with ambulance services available for emergencies.
Commitment to World-Class Infrastructure
The transformation of Prayagraj Airport underscores the government’s commitment to providing world-class infrastructure. This initiative aims to ensure seamless connectivity and an unmatched travel experience for all devotees visiting during the Maha Kumbh 2025. With the airport’s modernization, the government is not only enhancing the travel experience but also promoting regional connectivity and tourism in the area.
As the Maha Kumbh approaches, Prayagraj Airport stands ready to welcome millions of pilgrims, offering them a modern and efficient gateway to their spiritual journey. The ongoing efforts to improve facilities and services reflect a dedication to meeting the needs of travelers and ensuring a memorable experience for all who visit this sacred city.
