PRAKRITI 2025 Conference Sparks Climate Action

The International Conference on Carbon Markets, PRAKRITI 2025, concluded its second day with a strong focus on climate resilience and sustainable practices. Inaugurated by Shri Manohar Lal, the Honโble Minister of Power and Housing & Urban Affairs, the event gathered experts, policymakers, and industry leaders to discuss the future of carbon markets. Notable participants included actress and UN Goodwill Ambassador Dia Mirza, who emphasized the importance of individual and collective action in combating climate change.
Keynote Insights from Industry Leaders
Mr. Thomas Kerr, Lead Climate Change Specialist at the World Bank, chaired the opening plenary session, focusing on the Indian Carbon Market (ICM). He highlighted the interconnectedness of global carbon pricing policies and their potential impact on Indian industries. Kerr pointed out that the European Unionโs Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) could significantly affect Indian exports, particularly in high-emission sectors like steel and aluminum. He urged businesses to prepare for these changes, stating, โIf you build it, they will come,โ emphasizing the need for proactive engagement in domestic carbon markets.
In a thematic address, Mr. Ashok Lavasa, Former Finance Secretary, discussed the importance of governance and accountability in climate finance. He outlined the complexities of global carbon markets and the challenges India faces in establishing a robust framework. Lavasa stressed that successful implementation requires strong monitoring and verification (MRV) systems, equitable benefit distribution, and tailored policies that address India’s unique needs. His insights underscored the necessity of international collaboration while maintaining a focus on domestic priorities.
Engaging Youth and Promoting Sustainable Practices
Dia Mirza’s participation added a compelling voice to the conference, as she engaged in a fireside chat moderated by Mr. Saurabh Diddi, Director of the Bureau of Energy Efficiency. Mirza spoke passionately about the role of individuals in driving change, stating, โBig change will only occur when it starts from the top down.โ She praised the Government of Indiaโs initiatives under the LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment) program, which promotes mindful consumption. Mirza also highlighted the critical role of youth in climate discussions, advocating for their active involvement in shaping sustainable futures.
Her vision for sustainability included ambitious projects aimed at eradicating single-use plastics and fostering a circular economy. Mirza’s insights resonated with attendees, reinforcing the idea that collective action is essential for meaningful progress in addressing climate challenges.
A Collaborative Approach to Climate Solutions
The second day of PRAKRITI 2025 featured a series of thematic sessions led by senior government officials and industry experts. Discussions centered on various topics, including incentivizing renewable energy developers through carbon markets, opportunities arising from Article 6, and the role of ecosystem-based interventions in achieving net-zero goals. The conference attracted over 600 delegates and 80 experts from key Indian ministries, financial institutions, and international NGOs, showcasing a unified approach to tackling climate issues.
This collaborative effort reflects India’s commitment to meeting its climate goals and fostering a sustainable future.
