Piyush Goyal seeks FICCI’s support for innovation
Rs 1 lakh crore has been allocated by the Government for the Anusandhan National Research Foundation (ANRF), a newly established organization. Union Minister of Commerce & Industry, Shri Piyush Goyal, emphasized the importance of utilizing this funding to promote innovation and create a research-based ecosystem in India. He also stressed the need for the youth to develop a mindset of experimenting and generating new ideas. Shri Goyal made these remarks during his keynote address at the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry’s (FICCI) 97th Annual General Meeting and Annual Convention in New Delhi.
The Minister expressed optimism that the Government’s initiative to support the development of India’s research and development (R&D) ecosystem will attract interest from industry leaders. He urged participants at the event to provide suggestions on how to make the funding processes more outcome-oriented and time-efficient. Shri Goyal also advocated for the involvement of private sector institutions in the industry-academia-government partnership to foster innovation and collaboration. This collaboration is crucial in meeting the needs of the people and boosting exports.
During his speech, Shri Goyal highlighted various initiatives undertaken by the Modi government, such as Digital India, Pradhan Mantri Sahaj Bijli Har Ghar Yojana – SAUBHAGYA, Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana (PMGKAY), Ayushman Bharat, and others. He referred to these initiatives as “beads in a necklace” that have contributed to India’s rapid transformation.
The Minister commended the Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM) led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, stating that it continues to shape the future of the nation. He noted that cleanliness awareness is a revolution initiated by the Prime Minister and praised FICCI for organizing an award category called “Excellence in Swachh Industry Parks” to promote cleanliness in industrial parks across the country. Shri Goyal emphasized the importance of cleanliness in economic development, job creation, and employment. He encouraged industries and corporate offices to prioritize cleanliness as part of their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives and also suggested that CSRs adopt toilets in schools and colleges to positively impact children’s futures and contribute to India’s growth story.
Shri Goyal urged industry leaders to play a more proactive role and work closely with the Government to reduce compliance burdens and decriminalize laws that are detrimental to businesses. He emphasized that FICCI should serve as a feedback mechanism to help the Government improve its policies and enhance the ease of doing business in the country.
Highlighting the increasing global importance of India, the Minister emphasized that the nation has gained the trust of the world and its businesses are increasingly becoming part of global value chains. He stated that India, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has an important role to play for the Global South and is seen as the growth engine of the world.
Recognizing the need to raise quality standards in the country, Shri Goyal urged FICCI to utilize its technical committees and appoint representatives from every industry to ensure that standards are maintained. This approach will make quality standards more practical and useful, positioning India as a producer of high-quality goods and services. The Minister envisioned India as not only a trusted partner but also a provider of quality goods, which would contribute to the nation’s journey towards a prosperous India.
