Piyush Goyal Commends Negotiators for FTAs Following India-US Trade Agreement

Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal recently shed light on the intricate negotiations that shape India’s free trade agreements (FTAs). In an interview with PTI, he emphasized the importance of building strong relationships with negotiators from other countries, highlighting that these discussions are crucial for protecting national interests. Goyal’s insights come on the heels of a significant trade agreement between India and the United States, which aims to reduce tariffs on Indian goods entering the U.S. from 50% to 18%. This agreement is expected to bolster India’s economy and enhance trade relations with key partners.

Insights into Negotiation Strategies

During the interview, Goyal revealed that he has personally met with every negotiator involved in India’s trade agreements. He underscored the importance of respecting the interests of other countries while negotiating, stating, “Negotiators have to do their job; it is about protecting their own interests and securing maximum benefit for their country.” He described the process as a long-term responsibility that requires caution and sharpness, along with the ability to build rapport with counterparts. This rapport can lead to additional benefits and a better understanding of each other’s perspectives, especially when trade-offs are necessary. Goyal noted that India’s negotiating style prioritizes mutual respect, which has been beneficial in all nine agreements he has been involved in.

Details of the India-US Trade Agreement

The recent trade agreement with the United States marks a significant milestone in India’s trade relations. Under this pact, tariffs on various Indian goods entering the U.S. will be reduced, benefiting sectors such as textiles, leather, and organic chemicals. In exchange, India will lower tariffs on a range of American industrial goods and agricultural products. Goyal emphasized that despite the reduction in tariffs, India maintains a competitive advantage, particularly when compared to countries like China, which faces higher tariffs. He dismissed concerns that India is conceding too much in the negotiations, asserting that the agreement will ultimately enhance India’s trade position.

Progress on the India-EU FTA

Goyal also discussed the India-European Union FTA, which he described as a landmark agreement. He credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s strong relationships with global leaders for facilitating successful negotiations. The FTA, which has been in the works for nearly 18 years, has garnered positive feedback from all 27 EU member nations. Goyal stated that the agreement is welcomed across Europe and is expected to be formally signed once the legal framework is finalized. As the EU is India’s largest trading partner, this agreement is poised to strengthen economic ties further.

The Dynamics of Trade Negotiations

Reflecting on the nature of trade negotiations, Goyal acknowledged that they can be intense and require a strategic mindset. He mentioned that while maintaining composure is essential, there are moments when losing one’s temper can serve a purpose. He expressed gratitude for the support he has received from Prime Minister Modi and other government officials, emphasizing that the negotiations have been a collaborative effort. Goyal asserted that all agreements reached have prioritized public good and national interest, ensuring that they are fair and balanced. He concluded by confidently predicting that India will become the third-largest economy by 2027-28, a goal he believes is achievable under the current leadership.
