PFRDA Observes NPS Diwas 2025 to Promote Retirement Security in India
The Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (PFRDA) marked NPS Diwas 2025 in New Delhi on October 1, focusing on the theme “Inclusive Pensions, Innovative Solutions: Strengthening Retirement Security in India.” This annual event brought together key policymakers, industry leaders, and stakeholders to discuss strategies aimed at expanding pension coverage and enhancing the retirement ecosystem in the country. Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman emphasized the importance of pension planning as a necessity for financial independence, urging citizens to prioritize their retirement savings.
Keynote Address Highlights
During her keynote address, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman highlighted the transformative impact of the National Pension System (NPS) on India’s pension landscape. She noted that the NPS has evolved from serving government employees to encompassing all citizens, offering one of the most cost-effective schemes with consistently high returns. Sitharaman called for a nationwide movement to encourage early retirement planning, urging citizens from all backgrounds to participate. She also proposed training women as ‘Pension Sakhis’ to boost enrollment, similar to the successful ‘Bima Sakhis’ initiative by LIC.
Government Initiatives for Pension Security
Shri M. Nagaraju, Secretary of the Department of Financial Services, emphasized the need for a robust pension framework in light of the changing socio-economic landscape. He stressed the importance of financial literacy and collaboration among institutions to create a future-ready pension network. Nagaraju announced the establishment of the Forum for Regulatory Coordination and Development of Pension Products, aimed at harmonizing regulatory practices and investment standards across various pension products. Dr. V. Anantha Nageswaran, Chief Economic Advisor, pointed out that India is aging rapidly, with projections indicating that the population over 60 will double by 2050. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to ensuring adequate savings for citizens through various initiatives.
Innovative Initiatives Launched
The celebrations featured several landmark initiatives, including the launch of the Multiple Schemes Framework, which allows all ten pension funds to target diverse segments such as professionals, entrepreneurs, and platform workers. A pilot program initiated by Zomato, in collaboration with HDFC Pension Fund, distributed Permanent Retirement Account Numbers (PRANs) to over 60,000 platform workers, aiming to extend pension coverage to the gig economy. Additionally, PFRDA signed a Memorandum of Understanding with NABARD to enhance outreach to the agricultural sector, aiming to create awareness among 100 million farmer members through 45,000 Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs).
Engagement and Future Directions
The event also included three technical sessions that explored critical themes related to sustainable retirement payouts and inclusive pension solutions. High-powered panel discussions addressed topics such as securing income for agripreneurs and platform workers. Smt. Mamta Shankar, Whole Time Member of PFRDA, concluded the event by reaffirming the authority’s mission to ensure universal pension coverage and financial dignity for India’s aging population. NPS Diwas, first observed in 2021, has evolved into a significant platform for dialogue and reform in India’s pension landscape, encouraging citizens to prioritize their financial independence in retirement.
