PAWS Mumbai Calls for Legal Action Against Chhaya Kadam

The Plant and Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) Mumbai has lodged a formal complaint against actress Chhaya Kadam, alleging that she confessed to consuming meat from protected wildlife species during a recent interview. The NGO is urging forest authorities to investigate the sourcing of the meat and examine potential poaching violations. In response, the Thane Forest Department has initiated an inquiry into the matter.

Details of the Complaint

PAWS Mumbai has taken significant steps by submitting a letter to the Chief Conservator of Forests and the Divisional Forest Officer in Thane. The complaint centers around statements made by Kadam in a radio interview, which was later posted on YouTube. Sunish Subramanian Kunju, the Honorary Wildlife Warden and founder of PAWS Mumbai, expressed concern over Kadam’s claims. He stated that she admitted to consuming meat from various protected species, including mouse deer, rabbits, wild boar, monitor lizard, and porcupine. Kunju emphasized that such admissions could mislead the public and violate the Wildlife (Protection) Act of 1972. He called for a thorough investigation and legal action against Kadam and any individuals involved in the alleged poaching activities.

The Divisional Forest Officer (Vigilance), Roshan Rathod, confirmed the receipt of the complaint. He noted that it has been forwarded to the Deputy Conservator of Forests for further inquiry. Rathod indicated that Kadam would be summoned for questioning as part of the investigation. The complaint highlights potential violations of both the Wildlife Protection Act and the Biological Diversity Act, urging authorities to treat Kadam’s statements as a serious admission of guilt.

Chhaya Kadam is a well-known figure in the Indian film industry, recognized for her performances in notable films such as *Laapataa Ladies* and *Gangubai Kathiawadi*. The allegations against Chhaya Kadam have sparked a mix of reactions from the public and wildlife conservation advocates. Many are calling for stricter enforcement of wildlife protection laws, emphasizing the importance of preserving endangered species. The case has also reignited discussions about the responsibilities of public figures in promoting ethical behavior and environmental awareness.

As the investigation unfolds, it remains to be seen how this situation will impact Kadam’s career and the broader conversation surrounding wildlife conservation in India. The actions taken by PAWS Mumbai highlight the crucial role that NGOs play in holding individuals accountable for their actions, particularly when it comes to the protection of vulnerable wildlife.

The outcome of the inquiry will likely influence public perception and could lead to increased scrutiny of similar cases in the entertainment industry.
