Pablo Picasso: Master of Modern Art
Pablo Picasso (25 October 1881 – 8 April 1973) was a Spanish painter and sculptor who spent most of his adult life in France. He co-founded the Cubist movement, invented constructed sculpture, co-invented collage, and developed a wide variety of artistic styles that shaped 20th-century art.
Early Life and Education
Pablo Ruiz Picasso was born on 25 October 1881 in Málaga, Andalusia, in southern Spain, the first child of José Ruiz y Blasco and MarÃa Picasso y López. His father was a painter specializing in naturalistic depictions of birds and game, and later became a professor of art at the School of Crafts and curator of a local museum. The surname Picasso came from Liguria in north-western Italy; his maternal great-grandfather, Tommaso Picasso, had moved to Spain around 1807.
From age seven, Picasso received formal artistic training from his father in figure drawing and oil painting. His father was a traditional academic artist who emphasized disciplined copying of the masters and drawing from plaster casts and live models. The family moved to A Coruña in 1891, where his father took a professorship at the School of Fine Arts. In 1895, after his seven-year-old sister Conchita died of diphtheria, the family relocated to Barcelona, where Picasso thrived and regarded the city as his true home.
At age 13, Picasso was admitted to the advanced class at Barcelona’s School of Fine Arts after completing an entrance examination in a week—a process that typically took students a month. At 16, he traveled to Madrid to study at the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando, the country’s foremost art school, but disliked formal instruction and stopped attending classes soon after enrollment. He spent his time in Madrid visiting the Prado, where he especially admired the works of El Greco; the elongated limbs, arresting colors, and mystical qualities of El Greco’s paintings later echoed in Picasso’s own work.
Career and Achievements
Picasso’s career as a painter began by 1894, as evidenced by works now held in the Museu Picasso in Barcelona. During the first decade of the 20th century, his style underwent radical transformation as he experimented with different theories, techniques, and ideas. After 1906, the Fauvist work of Henri Matisse motivated Picasso to explore more experimental directions, beginning a fruitful rivalry between the two artists, who critics often paired as leaders of modern art.
His work is commonly divided into distinct periods. The Blue Period (1901–1904) and Rose Period (1904–1906) gave way to the African-influenced Period (1907–1909), followed by Analytic Cubism (1909–1912) and Synthetic Cubism (1912–1919), also called the Crystal period. Much of his work in the late 1910s and early 1920s adopted a neoclassical style, while his mid-1920s work often incorporated characteristics of Surrealism. His later work frequently combined elements from his earlier periods.
Exceptionally prolific throughout his long life, Picasso achieved universal renown and immense fortune for his revolutionary accomplishments. His career spanned more than 76 years, from his late teens until his death in 1973.
Notable Events and Milestones
In 1907, Picasso created Les Demoiselles d’Avignon, a proto-Cubist work that marked a turning point in modern art. Three decades later, in 1937, he painted Guernica, an anti-war masterpiece depicting the bombing of Guernica by German and Italian air forces during the Spanish Civil War. This dramatic work became one of his most famous paintings and a powerful statement against violence.
