Operation Clean Air Targets Polluting Industries in Ghaziabad
In a robust bid to tackle illegal and environmentally harmful industrial operations in the National Capital Region (NCR), the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) conducted a significant inspection drive in Loni, Ghaziabad on August 25, 2026. This initiative, known as Operation Clean Air, aimed to identify and curb units operating outside environmental regulations.
The inspection involved seven flying squads, comprising Magistrates, Police personnel, and officials from the Uttar Pradesh Pollution Control Board (UPPCB). Together, they conducted thorough checks at 28 industrial sites in the Loni area. Shocking revelations emerged as every single one of the inspected premises was found to be non-compliant with established environmental standards.
Widespread Violations Discovered
The inspections uncovered a range of serious violations. Notable among these were 21 cases operating without valid Consent to Operate (CTO), which is essential for legal industrial functioning. Additionally, 14 units were reported using unapproved fuels, including wood and coal. In eight instances, inspections revealed furnaces operating without the necessary Air Pollution Control Devices (APCDs) or appropriate chimney arrangements.
Other alarming findings included improper open painting and powder-coating practices, as well as units continuing operations without adequate air pollution control infrastructure. These infractions highlight a concerning trend of negligence towards environmental guidelines.
Sealing and Enforcement of Non-Compliant Units
In response to these violations, UPPCB, along with the District Administration and Flying Squad, proceeded to seal 16 non-compliant premises. Furthermore, six preliminary reports and Show Cause Notices (SCNs) were issued to the responsible units, while notices were posted at others, especially where units were found locked or occupants had fled the scene upon the arrival of enforcement officials.
The Commission reiterated the imperative for industrial units in the NCR to adhere strictly to environmental regulations. Operating without necessary statutory consents, utilizing illegal fuels, and running processes without adequate pollution control measures are viewed as severe violations that call for strict enforcement.

Looking ahead, the Commission is committed to continuing its inspections and enforcement efforts under Operation Clean Air throughout the NCR. This initiative aims to ensure compliance with environmental norms and to promote timely corrective actions against violations. Agencies involved have been instructed to uphold strict enforcement and take necessary actions against any non-compliant units.
