OpenAI Launches GPT-5.1 Enhancing ChatGPT with Advanced Conversational Tools
OpenAI has unveiled GPT-5.1, the latest iteration of its language model, aimed at enhancing the performance and interaction quality of ChatGPT. This update introduces two distinct versions: GPT-5.1 Instant and GPT-5.1 Thinking, both engineered to respond more effectively to user queries. The rollout of these models is expected to occur over the next week, while earlier versions will remain available for three months before being phased out.
The new GPT-5.1 models are designed to improve user experience significantly. GPT-5.1 Instant focuses on delivering smoother and more accurate responses, closely adhering to user instructions. In contrast, GPT-5.1 Thinking is optimized for speed, particularly in handling simple tasks, while ensuring consistency during longer or more complex interactions. ChatGPT will automatically select the most appropriate model for each query, streamlining the user experience. This dual approach aims to cater to a wide range of user needs, enhancing the overall functionality of the platform.
Customisation Features for Users
OpenAI has also expanded the customisation options available to ChatGPT users. The update introduces eight distinct personality presets, allowing users to choose from styles such as Default, Professional, Friendly, Candid, Quirky, Efficient, Nerdy, and Cynical. These presets enable users to tailor the model’s tone according to the context and purpose of their interactions. Additionally, OpenAI is testing a feature that allows for direct fine-tuning of ChatGPT’s communication style through user settings, which will be gradually rolled out to select users. Fidji Simo, OpenAI’s Applications CEO, highlighted the importance of customisation, noting that with over 800 million users, a single conversational tone is no longer sufficient to meet diverse needs.
User Feedback and Competitive Landscape
The initial launch of the GPT-5 update in August received mixed reviews from users. Some expressed disappointment regarding the limited improvements compared to previous models. In response to this feedback, OpenAI reinstated GPT-4o as an available option shortly after the GPT-5 launch. Meanwhile, OpenAI’s strategic partner, Microsoft, has been exploring alternatives from Anthropic, integrating these models into various tools such as Copilot Researcher, GitHub Copilot, and a new Office Agent for automating tasks in Word and PowerPoint. This competitive landscape underscores the ongoing evolution of AI technologies and the need for continuous improvement.
New Features and Future Directions
The release of GPT-5.1 coincides with OpenAI’s recent introduction of ChatGPT Atlas, an AI-powered web browser featuring an “agent mode.” Currently available only to ChatGPT Plus and Pro subscribers, this feature allows users to perform browser tasks through direct AI actions.
