Oil Minister Hardeep Singh Puri recently engaged with leading global energy figures during the 9th OPEC International Seminar held in Vienna. His discussions aimed to enhance India’s energy security and foster partnerships throughout the hydrocarbons value chain. Key meetings included dialogues with oil ministers from Kuwait and Nigeria, as well as executives from major energy companies like Shell and BP, focusing on expanding trade and collaboration in oil and gas exploration.
Strengthening Ties with Kuwait
During his visit, Puri met with Tareq Sulaiman Al-Roumi, the Kuwaiti Oil Minister and Chairman of the Kuwait Petroleum Corporation (KPC). The two leaders discussed strategies to deepen their cooperation in the energy sector. Kuwait ranks as India’s sixth-largest source of crude oil and is the fourth-largest supplier of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG). This partnership is vital for India, which relies heavily on imports to meet its energy needs. The discussions underscored the importance of maintaining a robust energy relationship, particularly as both nations navigate the complexities of the global oil market.
Expanding Trade with Nigeria
In a separate meeting with Heineken Lokpobiri, Nigeria’s Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Puri explored opportunities to enhance crude oil trade between the two countries. Indian companies have consistently purchased Nigerian crude, and the dialogue aimed to identify new avenues for expanding this trade. The longstanding partnership between India and Nigeria is crucial, especially as India seeks to secure its energy supply amidst fluctuating global markets. The discussions highlighted the mutual benefits of reinforcing this relationship, which plays a significant role in India’s energy strategy.
Collaborations with Major Energy Firms
Puri’s agenda also included discussions with Shell CEO Wael Sawan regarding potential collaborations in oil and gas exploration. The Indian Minister emphasized the country’s goal to increase the share of natural gas in its energy mix from 6% to 15%. In his interactions with OPEC Secretary General Haitham Al Ghais, Puri reaffirmed India’s commitment to its partnership with the oil producers’ group.
