Nyaya Bandhu Legal Aid Programme
The Nyaya Bandhu program, part of the “Designing Innovative Solutions for Holistic Access to Justice” (DISHA) initiative, aims to provide pro bono legal services to those in need across India. Launched by the Department of Justice, this program connects volunteer advocates with beneficiaries entitled to free legal aid under the Legal Services Authorities Act of 1987. Currently, over 9,200 advocates are registered on the Nyaya Bandhu platform, which also includes a dedicated application available on multiple platforms. The initiative not only serves individuals seeking legal assistance but also fosters a culture of pro bono work among law students through the establishment of Pro Bono Clubs in law colleges nationwide.
Expanding Access to Legal Aid
The Nyaya Bandhu program is designed to enhance access to legal aid, particularly in remote areas. Pro Bono Clubs (PBCs) in law schools play a crucial role in this effort by providing community legal assistance and raising awareness about legal rights among villagers. These clubs engage students in meaningful pro bono work, ensuring that legal support reaches those who may not otherwise have access. By fostering a spirit of service among future legal professionals, the program aims to create a sustainable model for legal assistance across the country.
Comprehensive Outreach Efforts
To broaden its outreach, the Nyaya Bandhu initiative has launched a dedicated portal available in 22 scheduled languages, making information accessible to a diverse population. The portal features various resources, including registration guidelines for both citizens and advocates. Additionally, the program utilizes multiple communication channels, such as broadcasts on Doordarshan and the distribution of pamphlets in public spaces, to inform the public about available legal services. These efforts are aimed at ensuring that individuals are aware of their rights and the legal support available to them.
Support for Women Beneficiaries
As of June 30, 2025, approximately 14,888 women have registered for legal assistance through the Nyaya Bandhu App. These women seek help with various legal issues, including domestic violence, family disputes, and workplace harassment. The program emphasizes the importance of providing targeted support to women, ensuring they have access to the legal resources necessary to navigate complex legal challenges. This focus on women’s rights is a critical aspect of the Nyaya Bandhu initiative, highlighting its commitment to promoting gender equality and justice.
Integration with Tele-Law Services
The Nyaya Bandhu Application has been integrated with Tele-Law services, allowing beneficiaries to consult with panel lawyers for pre-litigation advice. This integration enhances the program’s ability to provide comprehensive legal support, ensuring that individuals receive timely assistance. Village Level Entrepreneurs (VLEs) and panel lawyers work together to raise awareness about Nyaya Bandhu at Common Service Centres (CSCs) and through a toll-free helpline. This collaborative approach aims to create a robust mechanism for delivering legal advice and assistance to those in need, reinforcing the program’s commitment to accessibility and support for all citizens.
