Nothing Phone 3 Features Durable, Repair-Friendly Design

Carl Pei’s company, Nothing, has recently launched its latest smartphone, the Nothing Phone 3, which has sparked mixed reactions due to its pricing and distinctive design. Despite the criticism, a recent durability test conducted by popular YouTube creator Zack Nelson, known for his teardown videos, has revealed promising results for the device. The tests indicate that the Nothing Phone 3 holds up well against various stress tests, showcasing its structural integrity and build quality.

Nothing Phone 3 Durability Test

In a recent video, Zack Nelson, who operates under the handle @JerryRigEverything, put the Nothing Phone 3 through a series of rigorous durability tests. These tests included exposing the phone’s display to a lighter’s flame, bending the device to assess its structural strength, and scratching both the display and the aluminum frame with a knife. The results of these tests provide valuable insights into the phone’s resilience.

The Nothing Phone 3 features Gorilla Glass 7i on its display. During the scratch test, the touchscreen began to show marks at a Mohs hardness level of 6, while deeper scratches appeared at level 7. This suggests that while the Gorilla Glass 7i can protect against everyday items like keys and coins, it may not withstand scratches from sharper objects such as knives or steel nails.

One of the standout moments in Nelson’s video was the bend test. He applied pressure to both the front and back of the phone, and to his surprise, the device did not flex at all. Nelson noted that even with the added antenna lines on the aluminum frame, the Nothing Phone 3 maintained its shape, indicating a robust build quality. However, during the burn test, the 6.67-inch display suffered damage and did not recover its original state after cooling down. Overall, Nelson concluded that the phone successfully passed his durability assessment.

Nothing Phone 3 Teardown

Following the durability tests, Nelson proceeded with a detailed teardown of the Nothing Phone 3. He removed the back panel, revealing that the rear camera bumps are seamlessly integrated into the transparent glass design. The cover for the touch capacitive button, which controls the Glyph Matrix feature, is also part of the rear glass assembly. Beneath the Gorilla Glass Victus, a panel protects the phone’s internal components.

The teardown also uncovered an interesting design choice regarding the rear wireless charging coils. Unlike traditional designs, the coils in the Nothing Phone 3 do not form a symmetrical circle, which appears to accommodate the Glyph Matrix’s rear touch capacitive button. This unique design element highlights the innovative approach Nothing has taken with this smartphone.

To recap, the Nothing Phone 3 was officially launched in India on July 1. It is powered by the Snapdragon 8s Gen 4 chipset and offers configurations with up to 16GB of RAM. The device boasts a 6.67-inch AMOLED display with a resolution of 1,260 x 2,800 pixels, a pixel density of 460ppi, HDR10+ support, and a 120Hz adaptive refresh rate. In terms of photography, it features a triple camera setup on the back, each with 50-megapixel sensors, along with a 50-megapixel front-facing camera. The Indian variant is equipped with a 5,500mAh battery that supports 65W wired fast charging.
