Northern Railway Implements Safety Measures After Tragedy
In the wake of a tragic stampede at New Delhi railway station, Northern Railway has swiftly enacted a series of safety measures aimed at preventing future incidents. The stampede, which resulted in multiple casualties, has prompted railway authorities to reassess their operational strategies. The new measures focus on managing passenger flow, enhancing security, and improving communication. These steps are crucial, especially with the Mahakumbh festival drawing large crowds to Prayagraj.
New Train Operations to Manage Crowds
To alleviate congestion and ensure passenger safety, Northern Railway has decided that all special trains heading to Prayagraj will now operate exclusively from platform number 16. This change is designed to streamline passenger movement and reduce the risk of overcrowding on any single platform. Travelers wishing to board these trains are advised to access the station from the Ajmeri Gate side. Regular train services will continue to run from all other platforms as per usual schedules.
This strategic shift aims to minimize peak hour rushes that often lead to dangerous situations. By concentrating special train departures on one platform, railway officials hope to create a more organized environment for passengers. Additionally, Northern Railway has introduced three special trains by 7 PM to accommodate the increased demand for travel to Prayagraj. These include one train to Darbhanga and two additional trains to Prayagraj. A further special train is scheduled to leave at 9 PM to cater to evening travelers.
Enhanced Security Measures
In response to the recent incident, Northern Railway has significantly increased the deployment of Railway Protection Force (RPF) and Government Railway Police (GRP) personnel at New Delhi railway station. These officers are tasked with assisting passengers, guiding them to the correct platforms, and ensuring a smoother travel experience. The presence of security personnel is vital, especially during peak travel times when crowds can become overwhelming.
The railway authorities are also urging passengers to remain calm and avoid spreading rumors, which can exacerbate panic during busy travel periods. Travelers are encouraged to follow official announcements and avoid changing platforms based on hearsay. This cooperation is essential for maintaining order and safety at the station. The Indian Railways has emphasized that adherence to these operational plans will help facilitate the smooth execution of both regular and special train services.
Support for Affected Families and Ongoing Investigations
In light of the tragic events, Indian Railways has taken steps to support the families of the deceased and injured. An ex-gratia payment of 10 lakh rupees has been allocated to the families of the 18 individuals who lost their lives in the stampede. Additionally, those who sustained serious injuries will receive 2.5 lakh rupees, while passengers with minor injuries will be compensated with 1 lakh rupees.
The railway authorities have also established a helpline number, 139, to assist passengers with inquiries and support during this busy travel period. By 5 PM the day after the incident, the helpline had received over 130 calls related to the tragedy. Furthermore, a two-member high-level committee has been formed to investigate the incident. This committee, comprising senior railway officials, is tasked with uncovering the circumstances surrounding the stampede and recommending measures to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
