Northeast India Recognized as a New Epicentre

โ€œThe Northeast is no longer on the periphery of Indiaโ€”it is the new epicentre of Indiaโ€™s development journey,โ€ declared Shri Jayant Chaudhary, Minister of State for Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, during the Rising Northeast Investors Summit 2025. This landmark event, the largest investment dialogue ever held in the region, gathered global investors, policymakers, entrepreneurs, and community leaders to discuss the Northeast’s potential. Chaudhary emphasized the region’s transformation and the importance of nurturing its entrepreneurial spirit to drive future growth.

Vision for the Northeast

In a keynote address titled โ€œEducation to Entrepreneurship: Unlocking Northeastโ€™s Brightest Potential,โ€ Minister Chaudhary articulated a bold vision for the region. He highlighted the impressive achievements, such as Mizoram’s 100% literacy rate and the vibrant entrepreneurial spirit among the youth. โ€œThe Northeast is not just a region; itโ€™s a vibrant force reshaping Indiaโ€™s future,โ€ he stated. He called for a focus on risk-taking, skill development, and ecosystem support to fully unlock the region’s potential. The Minister also introduced the โ€˜Skilling for AI Readinessโ€™ (SOAR) programme, developed in collaboration with the Ministry of Education and NCVET, aimed at preparing youth for an AI-driven future. โ€œThrough this initiative, we plan to equip students with the tools to innovate ethically using AI,โ€ he added, emphasizing the need for a collective effort to harness the region’s energy and break old mindsets.

Success Stories from the Region

Minister Chaudhary shared inspiring examples of local entrepreneurs who are making significant contributions to the economy. One notable case is Shri Bhabhendra Mohan Borgohain from Assam, who established a Farmer Producer Company with 500 tea growers. He has created a state-of-the-art facility capable of processing 100,000 kg of organic and specialty teas annually. Another success story is that of Ms. Merina Lahiri, who leads a team of 300 women farmers and 15 artisans in producing Eri Silk products. Her Farmer Producer Organization (FPO) has gained recognition from the Government of India, showcasing the potential of sustainable practices rooted in tradition. These stories illustrate a broader trend of green initiatives emerging in Indiaโ€™s economy, as highlighted by Chaudhary.

Empowering the Youth and Women

The summit also underscored the government’s commitment to empowering the youth of the Northeast. Since 2015, the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship has provided apprenticeship opportunities to over 49,000 young individuals and entrepreneurship support to more than 300,000 through various programs. Notably, over 75% of participants in these entrepreneurship initiatives are women, reflecting a significant push towards gender inclusivity in economic development. The Udyamita se Atmanirbhar Pavilion, set up during the summit, showcased the entrepreneurial spirit of the Northeast, featuring eight dynamic entrepreneurs trained by the Indian Institute of Entrepreneurship. Their diverse ventures, ranging from agro-processing to eco-tourism, exemplify the transformative impact of Skill India initiatives.

A Platform for Sustainable Growth

The Rising Northeast Investors Summit 2025 serves as a crucial platform for fostering collaboration between public policy, private investment, and grassroots innovation across the region. With focused discussions on key sectors such as tourism, agriculture, logistics, digital economy, and green enterprises, the summit aims to position the Northeast as a hub for sustainable and inclusive growth. Minister Chaudhary concluded by reaffirming the government’s dedication to structural reforms and investment in the region’s youth. He urged stakeholders to transition from isolated successes to systemic transformation, emphasizing that the Northeast’s cultural icons are not just symbols but vital growth engines for the future.
