North East Trade and Investment Roadshow in Chennai

The Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (MDoNER) recently hosted the North East Trade and Investment Roadshow in Chennai. This event attracted significant interest from potential investors eager to explore opportunities in the North Eastern States of India. The roadshow featured prominent figures, including Shri Jyotiraditya M. Scindia, the Honโ€™ble Minister of MDoNER and Ministry of Communications, and Pu Lalnghinglova Hmar, the Honโ€™ble Minister of Sports & Youth Services from Mizoram. Senior officials from MDoNER, the North Eastern Council, and various North Eastern States also participated, highlighting the region’s potential for investment and development.

Emphasizing North East as an Economic Asset

During the event, Shri Jyotiraditya M. Scindia emphasized the North East as a vital economic asset for India, referring to it as “Asthalakshmi.” He noted that the region is poised for rapid industrialization, thanks to significant infrastructure development over the past decade. This includes improvements in air, road, and rail connectivity, as well as advancements in waterways. Each of the eight North Eastern states possesses unique strengths and resources, making the region an invaluable part of India’s growth narrative.

The Minister pointed out that the North Eastern Region is rich in cultural diversity, natural beauty, and strategic location. These attributes position it as a gateway to Southeast Asia, aligning with India’s Act East Policy. He highlighted various sectors ripe for investment, including tourism, agriculture, healthcare, entertainment, infrastructure, IT, textiles, and energy. The region’s high literacy rates and youthful population further enhance its appeal to investors. Scindia also praised Chennai as a thriving IT hub and encouraged local entrepreneurs to invest in North East India, particularly in sectors like agriculture and bamboo resources, which hold great potential for the furniture industry.

Investment Opportunities in Mizoram

Pu Lalnghinglova Hmar, the Honโ€™ble Minister of Sports & Youth Services from Mizoram, addressed the audience, focusing on the investment opportunities in his state. Despite its small population of around 1.1 million, Mizoram boasts significant agricultural potential, with 55% of its land dedicated to horticulture. The state is known for producing GI-tagged ginger and chillies, as well as mandarin oranges and papayas. Hmar emphasized the untapped potential of bamboo cultivation, which could be a lucrative sector for investors.

Additionally, Mizoram is positioning itself as a sports powerhouse, aligning with India’s vision for the 2036 Olympics. The state has produced several top athletes, indicating a growing sports sector that offers investment opportunities. Hmar urged investors to consider sectors such as tourism, infrastructure, and food processing, highlighting the state’s commitment to fostering a conducive environment for business growth.

Transformative Potential of North East India

Shri Chanchal Kumar, Secretary of MDoNER, spoke about the transformative potential of the North Eastern Region. He described it as a hub of innovation, cultural heritage, and economic opportunity. Over the past decade, the region has seen a remarkable transformation in connectivity, making it increasingly attractive to investors. Kumar noted that the economic growth of the North East has outpaced the national average, making it an ideal destination for businesses.

He highlighted the government’s efforts to create tailored policies that encourage investment, including the identification of eight tourism sites for development through public-private partnerships. The growth of the IT and ITeS sectors in the region also presents unique opportunities. Kumar mentioned the UNNATI scheme, which offers incentives for investment in North East India, and emphasized the region’s potential as a hub for medical tourism, catering to millions from neighboring countries. He invited investors to explore the vast opportunities in North East India and participate in its growth journey.
