OV Digital Desk

The vital and long overdue work for the permanent diversion of the Paravanar River course was completed yesterday, the 21stst August 2023. Most of 10.5 km out of the total 12 km had already been completed and from 26th July 2023, NLCIL resumed the 1.5km leaning portion.

The temporary alignment of the Paravanar River course is only 60 meters from the cut face of Mine-2. This Paravanar River has to handle rainwater from a catchment area of โ€‹โ€‹more than 100 square km from the northwestern and southern areas. Since several villages are involved in this area, it has become of paramount importance to safeguard the habitats and agricultural fields from flooding during the incessant and heavy rains. Taking responsibility for safeguarding the villages around the mines, NLCIL has taken on the vital task of providing an adequate and permanent waterway through the Paravanar Permanent Diversion Work.

The approximate area affected by the Paravanar Permanent Diversion for the total length of 12 km is 18 hectares. Already several acres of land are being irrigated with water from the Paravanar River which is run off from NLCIL mines throughout the year. With the commissioning of the current permanent course of the Paravanar River, a further extension of the farmland will now receive irrigation water for several acres. Also, the continuous source of water in the Paravanar River will help increase the availability of groundwater.
