NIXI Launches Internet Governance Internship Program

The National Internet Exchange of India (NIXI) has recently introduced an innovative Internet Governance Internship and Capacity Building Scheme. This initiative aims to enhance awareness and expertise in internet governance among Indian citizens. The program was officially launched by Shri S. Krishnan, the Secretary of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) and Chairman of NIXI. This initiative marks a significant step towards empowering the youth to engage in global internet governance processes.

Shaping Experts for Internet Governance

The primary goal of the Internet Governance Internship program is to equip participants with the necessary knowledge and skills to actively participate in global internet governance discussions. This includes collaboration with prominent organizations such as the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), the Internet Society (ISOC), and the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF). By working closely with these organizations, interns will gain valuable insights into the complexities of internet governance.

The program is designed to nurture a pool of domestic talent capable of addressing emerging internet governance challenges. Participants will learn about various aspects of internet governance, including policy-making, security, and infrastructure management. This knowledge will enable them to contribute meaningfully to discussions and decisions that shape the future of the internet in India and beyond. The initiative aims to create a generation of informed individuals who can advocate for fair and inclusive internet practices.

Internship Program Offers

NIXI’s internship program is structured to provide participants with practical experience in internet governance. It offers two parallel tracks: a six-month program and a three-month program. Each intern will receive mentorship from subject matter experts affiliated with international organizations like ICANN, APNIC, and APTLD. Additionally, they will be guided by retired government officials and faculty advisors from recognized institutions.

Interns will receive a monthly stipend of Rs. 20,000, along with support for conducting mandatory outreach programs. This financial assistance aims to encourage participation and ensure that interns can focus on their learning and development. The program not only provides financial support but also fosters a collaborative environment where interns can engage with experienced professionals in the field. This hands-on experience is invaluable for those looking to build a career in internet governance.

Insights from NIXI Leadership

Shri S. Krishnan expressed his enthusiasm for the internship program, emphasizing the need for diverse voices in internet governance. He stated, โ€œWe need people from different fields who can dedicate time to internet governance and represent the real concerns of our society.โ€ His vision is to inspire young minds to learn and grow, using their knowledge to make a positive impact in their communities.

Shri Bhuvnesh Kumar, Additional Secretary at MeitY, highlighted the importance of practical understanding in global internet governance. He noted that mentors play a crucial role in shaping future leaders in this field. By guiding young talent, the program aims to prepare the next generation to tackle global challenges and drive digital transformation.

Dr. Devesh Tyagi, CEO of NIXI, emphasized that this initiative is a vital step toward empowering Indian citizens to contribute meaningfully to the global internet governance ecosystem. He believes that by building a new generation of internet governance experts, NIXI is paving the way for a more inclusive and accessible digital world.
