NIPCCD Renamed to Savitribai Phule National Institute of Women and Child

The National Institute of Public Cooperation and Child Development (NIPCCD) has been officially renamed the Savitribai Phule National Institute of Women and Child Development. This change reflects the institute’s evolving mission to enhance support for women and children across India. Under the leadership of Union Minister for Women and Child Development, Smt. Annpurna Devi, the institute is set to inaugurate a new Regional Centre in Ranchi, Jharkhand, on July 4, 2025, aimed at improving training and research for key government programs in the Eastern region.

New Regional Centre in Ranchi

The upcoming Regional Centre in Ranchi is designed to address the specific training and research needs of the Ministryโ€™s flagship programs, including Mission Shakti, Mission Vatsalya, and Mission Saksham Anganwadi and Poshan 2.0. This facility will focus on the Eastern region, which encompasses Jharkhand, Bihar, Odisha, and West Bengal. Previously, training for these states was managed through Regional Centres in Guwahati and Lucknow, which posed logistical challenges due to long travel distances for many functionaries. The new centre aims to alleviate these issues, providing easier access to training and resources for over seven lakh functionaries operating across 115 districts in the region.

Additionally, the Ranchi Centre will offer an Advance Diploma in Child Guidance and Counselling, further enhancing the skills of frontline workers. This initiative is expected to significantly improve the effectiveness of the Ministryโ€™s missions by ensuring that local needs are met with tailored training and support.

A Tribute to Savitribai Phule

The renaming of NIPCCD to the Savitribai Phule National Institute of Women and Child Development serves as a tribute to the legacy of Savitribai Phule, a prominent social reformer in India. Smt. Annpurna Devi emphasized that this change reaffirms the government’s commitment to women and child-centric development. She noted that the establishment of the new Regional Centre in Ranchi marks a significant step toward decentralized capacity building in the Eastern region. The Union Minister highlighted the importance of empowering frontline functionaries with better access to training and support, which is crucial for strengthening flagship missions at the grassroots level.

Smt. Devi also mentioned that under the leadership of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, the government aims to ensure that no woman or child is left behind in the journey toward a developed India by 2047.

Focus on Local Issues and Customized Interventions

The Ranchi Regional Centre is expected to enhance the identification of local issues and facilitate customized interventions for women’s empowerment and child welfare in the Eastern region. It will support various activities, including research, counselling, and extension services related to child development, mental health, and adolescent well-being. This initiative underscores the Ministryโ€™s commitment to delivering services effectively and building regional capacity.

By bringing training services closer to field functionaries, the new centre aims to improve resource utilization and foster a more inclusive and empowered environment for women and children. The establishment of this centre is a significant step toward achieving the Ministry’s goals of last-mile delivery of services and ensuring that the needs of the community are met effectively.

The Role of the Institute

The Savitribai Phule National Institute of Women and Child Development, headquartered in New Delhi, currently operates regional centres in Bangalore, Guwahati, Lucknow, Indore, and Mohali. The institute serves as the apex body for training, research, documentation, and capacity building in the field of women and child development. It plays a crucial role in strengthening the implementation of various flagship schemes through both online and physical training programs.

With the renaming and the establishment of the new Regional Centre, the institute is poised to enhance its impact on women and child development across India, ensuring that the needs of these vulnerable populations are prioritized and addressed effectively.
