Nintendo Switch 2 Achieves Record-Breaking Launch Week Sales

Nintendo’s latest gaming console, the Switch 2, has made an impressive debut, selling over 3.5 million units within just four days of its launch on June 5. This remarkable achievement has positioned the Switch 2 as the fastest-selling Nintendo game system in history. Additionally, it has set a new record for the largest launch week sales for video game hardware in the United States, surpassing the previous record held by Sony’s PlayStation 4.

Nintendo Switch 2 Sets New Sales Record

The Switch 2 achieved a staggering 1.1 million units sold in its launch week, which ended on June 7, according to data from market research firm Circana. This figure does not include sales from the My Nintendo Store. The Switch 2’s launch week sales have now established a new benchmark for video game hardware in the US, eclipsing the previous record set by the PS4. Notably, the number of Switch 2 units sold in its first week outpaced the total sales of the PS4 in its first month, as confirmed by Circana director Mat Piscatella.

In addition to the console’s success, 79 percent of Switch 2 purchasers in the US also bought the game Mario Kart World, either as a standalone title or as part of a bundle with the console. While Nintendo has yet to release specific sales figures for Mario Kart World, retail tracking data from Circana indicates that it, along with Cyberpunk 2077 and the Switch 2 edition of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, were the top three best-selling physical titles during the console’s launch week.

Nintendo Switch 2’s Impressive Launch

The record-breaking sales figures highlight a strong launch for Nintendo’s new platform. The company announced that the Switch 2 had sold over 3.5 million units in just four days, making it the fastest-selling Nintendo game system to date. Doug Bowser, president and COO of Nintendo of America, expressed gratitude for the enthusiastic response from fans worldwide. He noted that players are already enjoying the new features and games that the Switch 2 offers, enhancing their gaming experiences both at home and on the go.

Looking ahead, Nintendo has set a target to sell 15 million units of the Switch 2 during the current fiscal year. Many industry analysts view this projection as conservative, given the high demand for the new console following a nearly nine-year gap since the original Switch’s release. However, during a financial earnings call in May, Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa acknowledged that the higher price point of the Switch 2 could present challenges for early adopters.

The launch of the Switch 2 was met with excitement, as fans lined up outside retail stores in Japan, the US, and other markets. The new hybrid console boasts several enhancements over its predecessor, including a more powerful custom Nvidia processor, a larger screen, and redesigned Joy-Con controllers, all of which contribute to its appeal among gamers.
