NHRC Announces 4-Week Summer Internship Programme for University Students in 2025

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) of India launched its four-week Summer Internship Programme (SIP) 2025 on June 16, 2025, at its headquarters in New Delhi. This initiative aims to enhance human rights awareness among university students. Out of 1,468 applicants from 42 institutions across 20 states and union territories, 80 students were selected, representing diverse fields such as Law, Social Sciences, Journalism, and International Relations.

Inauguration Highlights

During the inauguration, NHRC Chairperson Justice V. Ramasubramanian emphasized the significance of India’s diversity, which is reflected in the backgrounds of the selected interns. He spoke about the value of peer learning, likening it to the nurturing influence of family. Justice Ramasubramanian encouraged the interns to actively engage in their learning journey, stressing that knowledge should serve a purpose. He urged them to advocate for justice and empathy, aiming to create a society where equal rights and opportunities are available to all.

Youth’s Role in Human Rights

In his keynote address, NHRC Secretary General Shri Bharat Lal underscored the vital role of youth in promoting human rights. He called for a heightened sense of sensitivity and compassion among young people to tackle societal challenges effectively. Drawing from India’s rich civilizational values, he urged the interns to balance their understanding of rights with responsibilities. Lal expressed hope that the interns would leverage this opportunity to shape their futures positively and contribute to a more inclusive society.

Programme Overview

Shri Samir Kumar, NHRC Joint Secretary, provided an overview of the internship programme, highlighting the Commission’s commitment to promoting and protecting human rights. He detailed the programme’s structure, which includes interactive sessions, group research projects, book reviews, and field visits to various institutions such as NGOs and police stations. These activities are designed to deepen the interns’ understanding of human rights issues and inspire innovative solutions. The programme aims to strengthen their dedication to the cause of human rights.
