New Task Force Launched to Tackle Agricultural Challenges in India
The Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) has established a Special Task Force (STF) aimed at addressing pressing global agricultural challenges. This initiative was outlined during a recent meeting led by the Secretary of the Department of Agricultural Research and Education (DARE) and the Director General of ICAR. The task force is charged with developing strategies to ensure national food and input security across the country.
Expanding Farmer Outreach
One of the primary actions outlined is the expansion of the ‘Mera Gaon Mera Gaurav’ (MGMG) campaign. This initiative focuses on enhancing farmer outreach in 100 aspirational districts. By capitalizing on existing organizational structures, MGMG aims to deliver a comprehensive package of farming practices, fostering confidence among farmers at the ground level.
Campaign for Balanced Fertilizer Use
A dedicated campaign promoting the judicious use of fertilizers and bio-inputs is also in the works. The STF plans to assess fertilizer consumption at the district level, particularly for major crops like wheat and rice. The objective is to optimize resource efficiency and ensure that farmers maximize their yields.
Land-Use Efficiency through Diversification
In a bid to improve land-use efficiency, the task force is undertaking detailed mapping of millet-growing regions. This strategy aims to introduce high-value crop alternatives in areas traditionally dominated by low-productivity rice. Such alternatives may include the integration of eco-fisheries, particularly to boost farmer income during the Kharif season.
Harnessing Technology for Better Farming
The task force emphasizes the importance of technological and mechanical interventions in agriculture. Among these is the Direct Seeding of Rice (DSR) technique, which allows for timely planting while minimizing labor costs. To support this initiative, the All India Coordinated Research Project (AICRP) on Meteorology will provide real-time advisories to farmers, helping them make informed decisions.
Timely Execution and Monitoring
To ensure effective and timely execution of these strategies, the STF has appointed Nodal Officers within each Subject Matter Division (SMD). These officers will be responsible for weekly monitoring of progress and coordinating a consolidated actionable plan aimed at addressing key areas of concern.
The Special Task Force is set to convene as needed, utilizing feedback mechanisms and internal expertise to offer data-driven insights to the government. As global agricultural challenges continue to evolve, this proactive approach seeks to secure a stable and productive future for India’s agricultural sector.
