New Research Uncovers Ancient Egyptian Fortress Structure
Archaeologists from Egypt’s Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities have made significant discoveries regarding a fortress located in the Sinai desert, specifically at the site of Tell Abu Saifi. This fortress, which has undergone various modifications over the centuries, is believed to have featured an impressive landscape of 500 trees leading to its entrance approximately 2,000 years ago. These trees were likely planted in clay-lined circles flanking a road, indicating the site’s historical significance during the reign of Ptolemy I, a general under Alexander the Great.
Trees, Moats, and Defense
Recent findings reported by Sky News Arabia reveal that the fortress was encircled by a trench, or moat, measuring over 6.6 feet (2 meters) in depth. This defensive feature would have been crucial for protecting the fortress from various adversaries, including the Seleucid Empire, the Roman Republic, and local rebel groups during the Ptolemaic period. Elizabeth Macaulay, a classics professor at the City University of New York Graduate Center, noted that clay planting circles were likely utilized for tree cultivation in Ptolemaic Egypt. Archaeological evidence and historical papyri support the notion of large-scale agricultural practices. Should roots be discovered, they could confirm the purpose of these circles and assist in identifying the tree species that once thrived there.
Other Findings
In addition to the moat, archaeologists uncovered several other significant features, including living quarters that may have housed soldiers and their families. They also discovered a well-preserved road measuring 328 feet (100 meters) in length and 36 feet (11 meters) in width, paved with limestone slabs. This road likely served as a vital route for military units traveling to and from the fortress. Furthermore, the team unearthed four corners of a structure that may date back to an even earlier period. While the exact purpose of this structure remains uncertain, it is possible that it also served as a fortress, although further research is needed to establish its age and function.
