New Cooperative Societies Boost Indian Agriculture
The Ministry of Cooperation in India has recently established three national-level multi-state cooperative societies. These societies focus on exports, organic produce, and quality seeds. Registered under the Multi-State Cooperative Societies (MSCS) Act of 2002, they aim to enhance the agricultural sector by promoting cooperative practices. All cooperative societies interested in these activities can become members. This initiative is expected to strengthen the cooperative framework in India and improve the livelihoods of farmers.
National Cooperative Exports Limited (NCEL)
National Cooperative Exports Limited (NCEL) is a significant initiative aimed at enhancing the export capabilities of Indian cooperative societies. Promoted by major organizations like the Indian Farmers Fertilizer Cooperative Limited (IFFCO) and the Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation Limited (GCMMF), NCEL has an initial paid-up capital of โน500 crore. The authorized share capital stands at โน2,000 crore.
The primary goal of NCEL is to export surplus products from the Indian cooperative sector. By accessing international markets, NCEL aims to increase demand for Indian cooperative products and secure better prices. The society engages in various activities, including procurement, storage, processing, marketing, and branding. It also provides technical guidance, arranges financing, and implements government schemes to boost exports.
Since its inception, NCEL has made significant strides. It has welcomed over 9,510 cooperative members and successfully exported 31 agricultural commodities worth โน3,934 crore. Key exports include rice, onions, and sugar. Additionally, NCEL has achieved a net profit of โน26.40 crore for the financial year 2023-24 and distributed a 20% dividend to its members in its first operational year. State governments have also designated nodal agencies to collaborate with NCEL, further enhancing the market presence of cooperative products.
Bharatiya Beej Sahkari Samiti Limited (BBSSL)
Bharatiya Beej Sahkari Samiti Limited (BBSSL) focuses on the production and distribution of quality seeds. This society is also promoted by key organizations like IFFCO and the National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India Limited (NAFED). With an initial paid-up capital of โน250 crore and an authorized share capital of โน500 crore, BBSSL aims to improve crop yields through a cooperative network.
BBSSL’s mission is to reduce India’s dependence on imported seeds by enhancing the production of indigenous quality seeds. The society will oversee the entire process, from production to branding and packaging. By leveraging various government schemes, BBSSL aims to promote the use of high-yielding variety (HYV) seeds among farmers. This initiative aligns with the government’s vision of “Sahakar-se-Samriddhi,” promoting inclusive growth through cooperatives.
The society has made notable progress since its establishment. Currently, 14,816 cooperatives are members of BBSSL. During the Rabi 2023-24 season, BBSSL produced 11,594 quintals of foundation seed. For the Kharif 2024 season, it has already sown 23 varieties of seven crops across ten states. Additionally, BBSSL has distributed 38,126 quintals of various crop seeds, significantly contributing to the agricultural sector.
National Cooperative Organics Limited (NCOL)
National Cooperative Organics Limited (NCOL) is dedicated to promoting organic farming in India. With an initial paid-up capital of โน100 crore and an authorized share capital of โน500 crore, NCOL is supported by organizations like the Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation Limited (GCMMF) and the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB).
NCOL’s primary objective is to provide institutional support for the aggregation, certification, and marketing of organic products. The society aims to enhance the production of organic products through its member cooperatives. By facilitating financial assistance and promoting organic farming, NCOL seeks to create a sustainable agricultural ecosystem.
Since its launch, NCOL has welcomed 5,184 cooperative members. It has started marketing organic products under the brand name “Bharat Organics,” with 14 products available in Safal outlets and two in the Delhi NCR region. Furthermore, NCOL has signed memorandums of understanding (MoUs) with several states to promote organic farming and create model bio-villages. Collaborations with companies like Mother Dairy aim to distribute organic products across various channels, enhancing market access for organic farmers.
