NESTS and Tata Motors Limited Collaborate to Support Tribal Youth

In a groundbreaking initiative aimed at boosting career opportunities for tribal students, the National Education Society for Tribal Students (NESTS) has partnered with Tata Motors Limited (TML). This collaboration, formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on July 9, 2025, seeks to provide skill-linked education and employment pathways for students graduating from Eklavya Model Residential Schools (EMRS). The agreement is set to benefit over 50,000 students across 28 states and 8 union territories, aligning with national development goals and the Sustainable Development Goals.

Objectives of the Partnership

The primary aim of this partnership is to enhance livelihood opportunities for tribal youth. The MoU outlines two key objectives: first, to facilitate skill-linked education and employment pathways for students who have completed their Grade 12 from EMRS; and second, to enable their enrollment in the Tata Motors Kaushalya Program. This initiative is designed to create a structured approach to integrating tribal students into the skilled workforce, thereby improving their quality of life and contributing to the socio-economic development of their communities.

Key Features of the Program

The Tata Motors Kaushalya Program will implement a rigorous selection process for students aged 18 to 23 who have achieved a minimum of 60% in their SSC (10th standard) exams and are completing their 12th standard at an EMRS. The program will adopt an “Earn & Learn” model, which combines a Diploma in Engineering with practical training. Students will participate in weekly classes led by universities or institutions, alongside On-the-Job Training (OJT) that aligns with the National Skills Qualification Framework (NSQF). Regular assessments will ensure students meet academic standards.

Additionally, the program will provide financial support through monthly stipends, subsidized canteen and transport services, uniforms, and personal protective equipment (PPE). Students will also receive insurance coverage, including Mediclaim and Personal Accident Insurance. High-performing students will have opportunities for further education, such as pursuing a B. Tech degree through partnerships with institutions like BITS Pilani.

Support and Oversight

Upon completion of the program, students will receive placement assistance, adhering to a “One Trainee, One Job” policy, which aims to secure employment opportunities at Tata Motors’ manufacturing and service locations across India. A Joint Review Committee, comprising members from both NESTS and TML, will monitor the program’s progress, ensuring that it meets its objectives and continues to adapt to the needs of the students.

Impact on Tribal Communities

This collaboration represents a significant advancement in empowering tribal youth by equipping them with relevant skills and direct pathways to employment. The initiative is expected to create a positive ripple effect, fostering economic independence among tribal communities and contributing to their overall socio-economic development. By focusing on education and employability, this partnership aims to uplift socially disadvantaged groups and align with broader national and global development goals.
