National Workshop on “Driving Innovation with IP” Held at IISc Bengaluru

To celebrate World Intellectual Property (IP) Day 2025, the National Research Development Corporation (NRDC) hosted a national workshop titled “Driving Innovation with IP: Strategic Approaches to Commercialization” in collaboration with the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) in Bengaluru. The event, held at the historic Faculty Hall of IISc, attracted over 250 in-person attendees and 500 virtual participants from various sectors, including academia, startups, and government. The workshop aimed to discuss strategies for effective IP management and commercialization, emphasizing the importance of innovation in driving national development.

Keynote Address and Initiatives

Commodore Amit Rastogi (Retd.), the Chairman and Managing Director of NRDC, delivered the keynote address, highlighting the organization’s commitment to advancing academic innovations. He discussed several initiatives, including NETRA and Design Clinic, aimed at enhancing technology readiness levels. Rastogi also announced future projects such as a Technology Exchange Portal and IP Fairs, which align with the vision of Viksit Bharat @2047. His remarks underscored the critical role of IP in fostering innovation and commercialization in India.

Insights from Academia and Industry Leaders

Prof. Govindan Rangarajan, Director of IISc, emphasized the necessity for structured IP protection within academic institutions. He acknowledged the cultural barriers that often hinder patenting efforts and called for a shift in mindset. The workshop featured several distinguished speakers, including Ms. Manjushree N, IAS, and other prominent figures from various research and educational institutions. They collectively advocated for stronger collaboration between academia and industry to build a robust IP ecosystem that supports innovation and commercialization.

Agreements and Collaborative Efforts

During the workshop, a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) was signed between NRDC and IIIT Bangalore to facilitate technology commercialization. Additionally, a Tripartite Licensing Agreement was established between NRDC, CSIR-CFTRI, and Varre Corporate Solutions for the commercialization of CSIR-CFTRI’s Spirulina Cereal and Choco Bar technology. These agreements signify a commitment to enhancing the commercialization of research outputs and fostering partnerships that can drive innovation.

Panel Discussions and Future Directions

The workshop included two major panel discussions featuring leaders from organizations such as Biocon Academy and CSIR-CFTRI. These discussions focused on bridging the gap between research and market needs, exploring effective licensing strategies, and addressing the importance of policy changes in fostering an innovative environment. The event concluded with a collective call to action, urging stakeholders to scale India’s innovation ecosystem through strategic IP commercialization, thereby enhancing the nation’s global competitiveness and fostering sustainable development.
