National Turmeric Board Launched to Boost Industry
In a significant move for the agricultural sector, Union Minister of Commerce and Industry, Shri Piyush Goyal, inaugurated the National Turmeric Board in New Delhi. This initiative aims to enhance the turmeric industry in India, which is already a global leader in turmeric production. The Board’s headquarters will be located in Nizamabad, a region known for its rich turmeric cultivation. Shri Palle Ganga Reddy has been appointed as the first Chairperson of the Board. The formation of the Board is expected to boost the income of turmeric producers, providing them with better resources and support. The Board will also promote research and development of new turmeric products, focusing on value addition for marketing both domestically and internationally. By enhancing awareness of turmeric’s essential and medicinal properties, the Board aims to increase its yield and improve logistics and supply chains, thereby fostering trade in new markets.

Shri Goyal highlighted that last year, India cultivated turmeric across 3.05 lakh hectares, producing 10.74 lakh tonnes. With India accounting for over 70% of global turmeric production, maintaining high standards is essential for sustaining this leadership position.
The Board will work closely with various government departments, including the Ministry of AYUSH, the Department of Pharmaceuticals, and the Department of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare. This collaboration will help streamline efforts to improve the quality of turmeric products. By focusing on safety standards, the Board aims to enhance consumer trust and expand market opportunities for Indian turmeric on the global stage.
Economic Impact and Future Prospects
The establishment of the National Turmeric Board is expected to have a significant economic impact on the turmeric sector. India is not only the largest producer but also the largest consumer and exporter of turmeric worldwide, holding more than 62% of the global market share. In the fiscal year 2023-24, India exported 1.62 lakh tonnes of turmeric and turmeric products, valued at approximately 226.5 million USD.
