National Science Day 2025: Empowering Youth for Innovation

Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh is set to lead the National Science Day (NSD) celebrations on February 28, 2025, at Vigyan Bhawan. This year’s theme, “Empowering Indian Youth for Global Leadership in Science & Innovation for Viksit Bharat,” reflects Prime Minister Narendra Modi‘s vision of harnessing youth potential to drive scientific advancements and national development.
Celebrating Scientific Achievement
National Science Day is observed annually on February 28 to honor the discovery of the ‘Raman Effect’ by Sir C.V. Raman, who received the Nobel Prize in 1930 for this groundbreaking work. The Government of India officially designated this day as National Science Day in 1986. The event serves as a platform to promote scientific awareness and appreciation among the public, encouraging curiosity and understanding of scientific principles.
On this occasion, various institutions across the country engage in theme-based science communication activities. These initiatives aim to inspire young minds to explore careers in science and technology. Open house sessions are organized in laboratories, allowing students to learn about research opportunities and the significance of scientific inquiry.
Key Lectures and Discussions
This year’s NSD will feature two prominent lectures aligned with the theme. Shri Shashi S. Vempati, Co-Founder of AI4India and former CEO of Prasar Bharati, along with Prof. Sanjay Behari, Director of the Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology in Kerala, will deliver insightful talks. Their presentations will focus on the role of youth in driving innovation and leadership in the scientific community.
Government’s Role in Promoting Science
The National Council for Science & Technology Communication (NCSTC), under the Department of Science and Technology (DST), plays a crucial role in coordinating the National Science Day celebrations across India. The NCSTC supports various programs, including lectures, quizzes, and open house sessions, to foster scientific engagement. These initiatives are carried out in collaboration with State S&T Councils and Departments, ensuring a nationwide celebration of science and technology.
Through these efforts, the government aims to enhance public understanding of scientific issues and encourage a culture of inquiry and innovation among the youth, ultimately contributing to the vision of a developed India.
