NASA has officially contracted SpaceX for the launch of its Near-Earth Object (NEO) Surveyor spacecraft, a mission aimed at identifying potentially hazardous asteroids and comets. Scheduled for launch no earlier than September 2027 from Florida’s Space Coast, the contract is valued at approximately $100 million. This initiative is a significant step in enhancing planetary defense by detecting and characterizing near-Earth objects that could pose a threat to our planet.
Mission Objectives and Capabilities
The NEO Surveyor spacecraft will be stationed at the Sun-Earth Lagrange Point 1, located about 1.5 million kilometers from Earth. This strategic position allows the spacecraft to utilize its 50-centimeter infrared telescope to scan the cosmos in two infrared wavelengths. Such capabilities enable the detection of both bright and dark asteroids, including those that are challenging to observe with current Earth-based telescopes. NASA aims for the mission to locate at least two-thirds of the undiscovered near-Earth objects (NEOs) that measure 140 meters or more in diameter. These larger asteroids are significant because they have the potential to cause regional devastation if they were to collide with Earth.
Planetary Defense Efforts and Previous Missions
The NEO Surveyor mission builds on previous planetary defense initiatives that have involved SpaceX. In 2021, NASA launched the Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) aboard a Falcon 9 rocket. This mission successfully impacted the asteroid Dimorphos, testing the feasibility of altering an asteroid’s trajectory. Following that, in 2024, the European Space Agency’s Hera mission was also launched using a Falcon 9 to study the effects of the DART impact on the Didymos system. These missions are part of a broader effort to develop technologies that can mitigate potential asteroid threats in the future, showcasing the growing importance of planetary defense in safeguarding Earth.
