Nari Shakti Contributes to India’s Actions Against Terrorism

โWomen pilots and female soldiers have been instrumental in India’s counter-terrorism efforts during Operation Sindoor,โ stated Defense Minister Rajnath Singh at the flag-in ceremony for INSV Tarini in Goa on May 29, 2025. He emphasized the remarkable performance of women in the Armed Forces, noting their increasing participation and significant contributions across various roles. Singh highlighted that women have taken on diverse responsibilities, from the challenging terrains of Siachen to the depths of the ocean, enhancing the nation’s security framework.
Celebrating Women’s Contributions in the Armed Forces
During his address, Rajnath Singh acknowledged the pivotal role of women in the Indian Armed Forces, particularly during Operation Sindoor. He pointed out that the inclusion of women has led to exceptional outcomes in various military operations. The Defense Minister noted that the doors of Sainik Schools are now open to girls, and this month, 17 women are set to graduate from the National Defence Academy. Singh remarked on the active participation of women in all branches of the Armed Forces during Operation Sindoor, showcasing their capabilities and commitment to national security.
The growing involvement of women in military roles reflects a broader shift in societal attitudes towards gender equality in defense services. Singh’s comments underscore the importance of recognizing and supporting women’s contributions, which have become increasingly vital in modern military operations. This recognition not only empowers women but also strengthens the overall effectiveness of the Armed Forces.
Navika Sagar Parikrama II: A Historic Expedition
The flag-in ceremony also celebrated the successful completion of ‘Navika Sagar Parikrama II’ by Indian Navy officers Lt Cdr Dilna K and Lt Cdr Roopa A. The duo made history by becoming the first Indian women to complete a circumnavigation of the globe in double-handed mode. Over eight months, they covered an impressive 25,600 nautical miles, making port calls in Fremantle, Lyttleton, Port Stanley, and Cape Town. Rajnath Singh praised their courage and endurance, describing their journey as a testament to ‘Nari Shakti,’ or women’s empowerment.
Singh commended the officers for overcoming physical and mental challenges during their expedition, highlighting their resilience in dealing with loneliness and adversity at sea. Their achievement not only brings pride to the nation but also serves as an inspiration for future generations of women. The Defense Minister encouraged the officers to document their experiences, ensuring that their story inspires young women across the country.
Recognition and Support from Naval Leadership
Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi also expressed admiration for the officers’ remarkable journey, emphasizing their resilience and indomitable spirit. He described their expedition as a tribute to India’s maritime legacy and a significant step in fostering national maritime awareness. Tripathi’s remarks reinforced the notion that their journey redefines the spirit of ‘Nari Shakti’ and serves as an inspiration for all Indians.
As part of the ceremony, a photo essay book titled ‘Breaking Waves, Making History’ was launched. This book chronicles the extraordinary expedition, offering insights into life at sea and the challenges faced by the officers. The successful completion of Navika Sagar Parikrama II highlights the Indian Navy’s commitment to nurturing talent, promoting adventure, and showcasing India’s self-reliance in oceanic exploration.
A Proud Moment for the Nation
The flag-in ceremony was attended by several dignitaries, including Goa’s Chief Secretary Dr. V Candavelou and Vice Admiral Arti Sarin, Director General of Armed Forces Medical Services. The event celebrated not only the achievements of the two officers but also the collective efforts of the Navy personnel who supported the expedition. Rajnath Singh expressed pride in being part of the welcome ceremony, emphasizing the significance of their accomplishment for the country.
The expedition, which was flagged off from INS Mandovi, Goa, on October 2, 2024, follows the successful completion of the first edition by a six-member women crew in 2017-18. The achievements of Lt Cdr Dilna K and Lt Cdr Roopa A mark a new chapter in the history of the Indian Navy, showcasing the capabilities and determination of women in defense roles.
