Myanmar Junta Bombs Amid Earthquake Crisis

In the wake of a devastating earthquake that has claimed over 1,600 lives in Myanmar, the military junta has intensified its airstrikes across the country. The United Nations has condemned these actions as “completely outrageous and unacceptable,” urging the junta to halt military operations while rescue efforts are underway. Special Rapporteur Tom Andrews has called for immediate international pressure on the regime to cease its attacks during this humanitarian crisis.

Ongoing Airstrikes Amid Rescue Efforts

Despite the catastrophic earthquake that struck Sagaing, Myanmar’s military has continued its bombing campaigns, further complicating rescue operations. Reports indicate that an airstrike in Naungcho, northern Shan state, resulted in the deaths of seven individuals, occurring just hours after the quake. Pro-democracy rebel groups have also reported aerial bombings in Chang-U township, the epicenter of the earthquake, as well as in areas near the Thai border.

The National Unity Government (NUG), representing the ousted civilian administration, announced a two-week pause in offensive military operations in earthquake-affected areas, although defensive actions will continue. This decision comes amid widespread destruction and loss of life, with many people still trapped under rubble. The junta has acknowledged 1,644 fatalities, but the true toll may be much higher as rescue efforts struggle against ongoing military aggression.

Humanitarian Concerns and Military Tactics

As the military junta continues its air assaults, there are growing fears that it will exploit humanitarian aid in its ongoing civil conflict. Historically, the junta has denied assistance to regions controlled by resistance groups, raising concerns about its intentions following the earthquake. Tom Andrews from the UN has highlighted that the military has a pattern of obstructing aid and arresting humanitarian workers during past disasters.

Andrews emphasized that the junta often “weaponizes” aid, directing it only to areas under its control while blocking access to those in dire need. This strategy has led to significant suffering among civilians, as aid trucks are frequently turned away and workers face arrest. The expectation is that similar tactics will be employed in the aftermath of the recent earthquake, further complicating relief efforts.

International Response and Ongoing Conflict

The international community has expressed alarm over the junta’s actions, with calls for increased pressure to halt military operations. The military regime, which has faced significant territorial losses to pro-democracy and ethnic resistance groups, is increasingly relying on air power to maintain control. An investigation revealed that the junta now governs less than a quarter of Myanmar, while resistance groups control approximately 42% of the country.

Despite the ongoing conflict, countries like Russia and China continue to support the junta, providing military equipment and training. This support has enabled the regime to sustain its aerial bombardments, which have historically resulted in high civilian casualties. As the situation evolves, the potential for further violence and humanitarian crises remains a pressing concern for both local and international observers.
