MPs Unite for TB Elimination Campaign
On December 18, 2024, a significant event took place at the Balayogi Auditorium in the Parliament Library building. Union Ministers of State for Health and Family Welfare, Shri Prataprao Jadhav and Smt. Anupriya Patel, gathered with around 250 Members of Parliament (MPs) from various political parties. The purpose of this meeting was to raise awareness about the 100-day Intensified TB Elimination Campaign. The campaign aims to combat tuberculosis (TB) in India, a disease that continues to pose a serious public health challenge. During the event, the ministers outlined the campaign’s objectives, key activities, and the vital role that MPs can play in its success. The gathering marked a crucial step in mobilizing support for TB elimination efforts across the country.
Role of Parliamentarians in TB Elimination
The Union Ministers emphasized the critical leadership role that MPs play in the fight against TB. They urged the parliamentarians to actively monitor the intensified anti-TB campaign in their constituencies. This includes raising awareness about TB, reducing stigma associated with the disease, and encouraging community participation. The ministers highlighted that the success of the campaign relies heavily on grassroots involvement. MPs were encouraged to engage with local communities, promote TB screening, and support those affected by the disease.
The ministers also discussed the government’s achievements in reducing TB incidence since 2015. They noted that India has made significant progress, with a decline in TB cases occurring at more than double the global rate. The introduction of innovative interventions, such as the Ni-kshay Poshan Yojana and increased Direct Benefit Transfer support for patients, has played a crucial role in this progress. The ministers stressed that the 1.75 lakh Ayushman Arogya Mandirs are instrumental in bringing TB care closer to patients, making it easier for them to access necessary services.
Innovative Strategies for TB Detection and Treatment
The campaign aims to reduce TB incidence and mortality in 347 priority districts across India. To achieve this, the government plans to implement intensified case-finding drives. These drives will utilize advanced screening and diagnostic technologies to ensure timely diagnosis and treatment initiation. Additionally, the campaign will expand access to specialized care for high-risk patients through initiatives like Differentiated TB Care.
Nutrition support is another critical aspect of the campaign. The Ni-kshay Poshan Yojana aims to provide essential nutritional assistance to TB patients, which is vital for their recovery. The ministers highlighted that these strategies are designed to not only detect TB cases more effectively but also to ensure that patients receive comprehensive care throughout their treatment journey.
Moreover, the MPs were informed about their responsibilities in this campaign. They are encouraged to hold regular Ni-kshay Shivirs to monitor progress and engage community members in the fight against TB. By mobilizing local leaders, NGOs, and corporates to become Ni-kshay Mitras, MPs can foster a collaborative approach to TB elimination.
Community Engagement and Awareness Initiatives
Community engagement is a cornerstone of the Intensified TB Elimination Campaign. The Union Ministers called on MPs to work closely with Panchayati Raj Institutions to achieve TB-free Panchayat certification. This involves organizing regular Gram Sabhas focused on TB awareness and ensuring that essential TB services are accessible to all community members.
The ministers also stressed the importance of honoring TB champions and Ni-kshay Mitras for their contributions to the campaign. Recognizing these individuals can inspire further collective action and motivate others to participate in the fight against TB. The campaign aims to create a sense of ownership among community members, encouraging them to take an active role in TB elimination efforts.
