‘Moonies’ Church Leader Refutes Allegations of Bribing Former South Korean First Lady

The leader of the Unification Church, Han Hak-ja, has firmly denied allegations that her organization bribed South Korea’s former first lady, Kim Keon Hee, with luxury gifts in exchange for business favors. Han, who is the widow of the church’s founder, was questioned for nine hours by prosecutors regarding these claims. The controversy comes amid a broader investigation into Kim, who is facing multiple charges, including bribery and stock manipulation, which she has denied.

Allegations Against Kim Keon Hee

Kim Keon Hee, the wife of ousted President Yoon Suk Yeol, is accused of accepting luxury items from the Unification Church, including two Chanel bags and a diamond necklace valued at approximately 80 million won (about $57,900). These allegations have intensified scrutiny on Kim, who was indicted last month on various charges. This situation marks a significant moment in South Korean history, as it is the first instance where both a former president and first lady have been jailed. President Yoon was arrested earlier this year for his involvement in a failed martial law bid that caused national turmoil.

Han Hak-ja’s Response

Emerging from her lengthy questioning session, Han Hak-ja rejected the bribery allegations, questioning why she would engage in such actions. The 82-year-old leader, who required assistance to walk, attributed the blame to a former church official who allegedly acted independently in offering gifts to Kim. This official has since been arrested. Han’s appearance at the prosecutor’s office followed her refusal to respond to summons on three occasions, citing health issues after heart surgery. An ambulance was reportedly on standby during her interrogation, highlighting the seriousness of the situation.

Political Fallout and Arrests

In a related development, authorities have arrested conservative lawmaker Kweon Seong-dong, who is accused of receiving 100 million won in bribes from the Unification Church. Kweon, once considered a close ally of President Yoon, has denied these allegations. The unfolding scandal has raised questions about the intersection of politics and religious organizations in South Korea, particularly regarding the influence of the Unification Church, which has faced criticism for its practices and alleged coercion of its members.

The Unification Church’s Controversial History

Founded in the 1950s by Moon Sun-myung, the Unification Church, officially known as The Family Federation for World Peace and Unification, is notorious for its mass wedding ceremonies and has been labeled as “cult-like” by critics. The church has faced legal challenges and scrutiny in various countries, including Japan, where it was thrust into the spotlight following the assassination of former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. The alleged assassin claimed that the church had financially ruined his family, leading to a grievance against Abe for promoting the organization. The Unification Church is banned in several regions, including parts of Japan and Singapore, reflecting its controversial standing on the global stage.
