Mihai Eminescu: Romania’s Greatest Romantic Poet
Mihai Eminescu (15 January 1850 – 15 June 1889) was a Romanian Romantic poet, novelist, and journalist from Moldavia. He is generally regarded as the most famous and influential Romanian poet of his era.
Early Life and Education
Eminescu was born in Botoșani, Moldavia, the seventh of eleven children born to Gheorghe Eminovici and Raluca Jurașcu. His father was an aristocrat from Bukovina, then part of the Austrian Empire, who had settled in Ipotești near Botoșani. His mother came from the Jurăscești family, an old noble lineage. Eminescu spent his early childhood in Botoșani and Ipotești before attending school in Cernăuți from 1858 to 1866, where he completed fourth grade and two years of gymnasium studies.
Career and Achievements
Eminescu’s first published work appeared in 1866 when, at age 16, his poem “La mormântul lui Aron Pumnul” (At the Grave of Aron Pumnul) was included in a pamphlet published by gymnasium students in Cernăuți. That same year, on 25 February, his poem “De-aș avea” (If I Had) was published in Iosif Vulcan’s periodical. At age 19, he traveled to Vienna, Austria to pursue further studies.
Eminescu became an active member of the Junimea literary society and worked as an editor for the newspaper Timpul (“The Time”), the official newspaper of the Conservative Party from 1880 to 1918. His poetry frequently employed metaphysical, mythological, and historical subjects, establishing him as a major literary figure of his time.
Notable Events and Milestones
Among Eminescu’s most celebrated works are Luceafărul, Odă în metru antic (Ode in Ancient Meter), and the five Letters (Epistles/Satires). His literary output was substantial: the poet’s manuscripts, comprising 46 volumes and approximately 14,000 pages, were offered by Titu Maiorescu as a gift to the Romanian Academy during a meeting held on 25 January 1902, several years after the poet’s death.
