Middle East Turmoil Challenges Economies: India’s Growth Remains Steady at 6.8% While Oil Shocks Impact US Outlook

India’s economic outlook remains optimistic despite the ongoing crisis in the Middle East, according to a recent report by SBI Research. The report forecasts a GDP growth rate of 6.8% to 7.1% for the fiscal year 2027, emphasizing that India is navigating current global challenges from a position of strength. With strong domestic fundamentals and a resilient banking sector, the country is poised to withstand external shocks, although potential risks, including inflation and geopolitical tensions, could impact growth.

Steady Growth Amid Global Challenges

SBI Research highlights that India has entered the current geopolitical landscape with a solid foundation. The report notes that the country’s growth rate for FY26 was 7.6%, similar to the period during the Russia-Ukraine crisis when India experienced growth exceeding 9%. This resilience is attributed to strong domestic fundamentals, which serve as a buffer against external pressures. The banking sector is particularly noted for its strength, although the report calls for a comprehensive package to support the Balance of Payments and stabilize the Indian Rupee.

Despite these strengths, the report does caution about potential risks that could cloud growth estimates. One significant concern is the looming threat of a Super El Niño, which could have adverse effects on agriculture and overall economic performance. Inflation is projected to average around 4.5%, while the fiscal deficit is expected to be between 4.5% and 4.6%. The ongoing conflict in the Middle East is exerting pressure on various sectors, including agriculture and micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs). Nevertheless, SBI Research points to emerging opportunities that could help India reposition itself within global value chains.

Global Oil Shocks and Their Impact on the US Economy

The report also examines the potential implications of oil shocks on the United States economy. Historically, such shocks have often led to recessions in the US. However, SBI Research suggests that the current situation may unfold differently. Unlike previous oil crises, US households are currently benefiting from substantial tax refunds, and the country has achieved energy self-sufficiency. This shift allows the US to retain more energy spending domestically when prices rise, potentially mitigating the economic fallout.

As geopolitical tensions escalate and energy markets face strain, concerns about a slowdown in the US economy are growing. While past oil shocks have had widespread repercussions, the report indicates that the current cycle may have limited effects on India. The report references historical events, such as the 1973 oil embargo and the 2008 financial crisis, where spikes in crude prices led to economic downturns in the US. However, the report emphasizes that the current economic landscape is markedly different, with the US now operating as a net energy exporter.

Risks and Opportunities in Global Financial Markets

Despite the positive outlook, SBI Research warns that risks remain. Ongoing tensions in the Middle East and disruptions to global supply chains contribute to uncertainty. While the traditional correlation between oil shocks and US recessions may weaken, it is not entirely absent. The report also notes shifts in global investment patterns, particularly in financial centers like Dubai and Abu Dhabi, which are entering a period of uncertainty. This situation presents an opportunity for India’s International Financial Services Centre (IFSC) GIFT City to emerge as a stable global financial destination.

Additionally, air travel patterns may shift as parts of Middle Eastern airspace become riskier. India and China could potentially serve as alternative transit hubs, although this would require significant investments in airport infrastructure and passenger experience. On the interest rate front, the report indicates that many central banks paused rate adjustments in 2026 after cuts in 2025, and they are now reassessing their strategies in light of ongoing geopolitical developments.
