Microsoft Partners with Anthropic to Enhance Model Context Protocol
Microsoft is set to enhance its artificial intelligence capabilities by adopting Anthropic’s Model Context Protocol (MCP), which will enable multiple AI agents to collaborate more effectively. This initiative aims to improve the memory capabilities of these agents and streamline their workflows. The announcement is anticipated during the Microsoft Build 2025 conference, where the company will showcase developments aimed at empowering developers to create innovative applications on its platform.
Standardizing AI Collaboration
Microsoft is taking significant steps to standardize the interaction between its AI chatbots and external data sources. According to Kevin Scott, the companyโs Chief Technology Officer, the focus is twofold: enabling multiple AI agents to work in unison and enhancing their long-term memory capabilities. This move comes in response to the challenges faced by AI systems when connecting with various third-party data sources, such as Google Cloud and Azure.
Anthropic introduced the MCP as a universal, open standard in November 2024. The protocol addresses the complexities involved in linking AI systems with diverse data hubs, which often operate under different protocols. The lack of uniformity in data retrieval processes can lead to inconsistencies in inference times and outputs. By implementing MCP, Microsoft aims to provide a cohesive framework that allows AI systems to access and process data from these knowledge sources efficiently.
Creating an ‘Agentic Web’
Scott emphasized the importance of adopting industry-wide standards to facilitate collaboration among AI agents developed by different companies. He likened the potential impact of MCP to the hypertext protocols of the 1990s, which played a crucial role in the expansion of the Internet. By fostering an “agentic web,” Microsoft envisions a future where AI agents can seamlessly interact and share information, enhancing their overall functionality.
In addition to improving collaboration, Microsoft is also focusing on enhancing the memory capabilities of its AI agents. Currently, most publicly available AI agents can only retain context for a single task, which limits their effectiveness in multi-turn conversations. While some advanced tools can provide detailed responses or execute web-based tasks, they often lack continuity between different tasks.
Innovative Memory Solutions
To address these limitations, Microsoft is developing a new approach called structured retrieval augmentation. This innovative system enables AI agents to extract relevant information from each interaction during a conversation, allowing them to maintain context throughout a session. This capability is expected to significantly enhance the utility of AI agents, making them more adept at handling complex tasks over extended interactions.
Details regarding this new approach, along with how Microsoft plans to implement MCP in its AI agents, are expected to be unveiled at the upcoming Build conference.
