Meta’s Ambitious Plans for Smart Wearables

Meta Platforms Inc. is making significant strides in the world of wearable technology. The company is not only upgrading its existing smart glasses but also exploring new devices like smartwatches and camera-equipped earbuds. This initiative aims to integrate artificial intelligence features into a broader range of products. As Meta seeks to redefine its identity as an AI innovator, the tech giant is gearing up for a series of exciting releases in the coming years.

Expanding the Smart Glasses Lineup

Meta’s current focus is on enhancing its smart glasses, particularly the Ray-Ban models. These glasses already come equipped with cameras and microphones, allowing users to take photos, play music, and handle calls. However, they do not offer augmented reality (AR) capabilities. The company is working on a new version of these glasses, internally code-named “Supernova 2,” which will be based on Oakley’s Sphaera design. This model will feature a centrally positioned camera, specifically targeting athletes like cyclists.

In addition to this, Meta plans to introduce a higher-end model called “Hypernova.” This new offering will closely resemble the current Ray-Ban glasses but will include a display on the lower part of the right lens. This display will project information directly into the user’s field of view, allowing them to run simple applications, view notifications, and see photos taken with the device. The Hypernova glasses are expected to carry a price tag of around $1,000, significantly higher than the current starting price of $299 for the Ray-Ban models. This move indicates Meta’s ambition to create a more immersive and functional wearable experience.

Innovative Control Mechanisms

To enhance user interaction with its smart glasses, Meta is testing a new control method involving a wrist strap, code-named “Ceres.” This accessory will allow users to manage their glasses more intuitively. The company has considered packaging this wrist strap with the Hypernova glasses, providing a seamless experience. Additionally, the glasses will feature touch controls on the temple, offering users multiple ways to interact with the device.

The wrist strap controller is reminiscent of the one used in Meta’s Orion prototype AR glasses, which were showcased last year. While the Hypernova glasses may also be compatible with a smartwatch, Meta has yet to release such a device. This innovative approach to control mechanisms reflects Meta’s commitment to enhancing user experience and making smart glasses more functional and user-friendly.

Future Plans for Smartwatches and AR

Meta has been contemplating the release of a smartwatch for several years. The company has gone through various changes in project details and priorities, leading to multiple cancellations and restarts. However, Meta is once again considering launching a smartwatch as early as this year. This device is expected to feature a display capable of showing photos taken with the smart glasses, creating a more integrated ecosystem for users.

Moreover, Meta is making strides toward its first true augmented reality product, a long-awaited goal for the tech industry. The company aims to release this AR device around 2027. By focusing on creating an all-in-one product, Meta hopes to eliminate the need for users to carry multiple devices, including smartphones. The Orion prototype, which relies on an external computing puck, is a step in this direction. Meta plans to provide this device to software developers in 2026, allowing them to build and test applications, making the glasses more appealing to consumers upon their eventual release.

Repositioning as an AI Innovator

The flurry of new products and upgrades is part of Meta’s broader strategy to reposition itself as a leader in artificial intelligence and wearable technology. The company has invested tens of billions of dollars in augmented and virtual reality development, launching various headsets and glasses. However, widespread consumer acceptance has been challenging to achieve.

By expanding its product lineup and enhancing existing devices, Meta aims to create a more compelling offering for consumers. The integration of AI features into wearables is expected to usher in a new era of computing. As the company continues to innovate and refine its products, it hopes to capture the interest of consumers and establish itself as a key player in the wearable technology market. With ambitious plans for the future, Meta is poised to make a significant impact in the tech industry.
