Measures to Improve Agriculture Infrastructure

The Indian government has launched a series of initiatives aimed at bolstering agricultural infrastructure and improving farmers’ incomes. Key programs include the Agriculture Infrastructure Fund (AIF), the Agriculture Marketing Infrastructure (AMI), and the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-KISAN), among others. These schemes are designed to provide financial support, enhance market access, and promote sustainable farming practices, ultimately benefiting millions of farmers across the country.

Agriculture Infrastructure Fund (AIF)

The Agriculture Infrastructure Fund (AIF) serves as a medium to long-term debt financing facility, offering interest subvention and credit guarantee support for viable projects in post-harvest management and community farming assets. The government has allocated โ‚น1 lakh crore for this initiative, with banks and financial institutions providing loans at a 3% interest rate. As of June 30, 2025, โ‚น66,310 crores have been sanctioned for over 113,000 projects under AIF, mobilizing a total investment of โ‚น107,502 crores in the agricultural sector. Notable projects include the establishment of 30,202 custom hiring centers, 22,827 processing units, and 15,982 warehouses, among others, which aim to enhance the efficiency and productivity of the agricultural sector.

Agricultural Marketing Infrastructure (AMI)

The Agricultural Marketing Infrastructure (AMI) scheme, part of the Integrated Scheme for Agricultural Marketing (ISAM), focuses on improving storage capacity for agricultural produce in rural areas. This demand-driven initiative provides subsidies of 25% to 33.33% on project costs, depending on the beneficiary’s category. Since its inception in April 2001, AMI has sanctioned 49,796 storage infrastructure projects, with a total storage capacity of 982.94 lakh metric tons. The scheme has released subsidies amounting to โ‚น4,829.37 crores, significantly enhancing the storage capabilities of farmers and agricultural entrepreneurs.

National Agriculture Market (e-NAM)

The National Agriculture Market (e-NAM) is a digital platform that integrates physical wholesale markets across various states and union territories, facilitating online trading of agricultural and horticultural products. As of June 30, 2025, approximately 1.79 crore farmers and 2.67 lakh traders have registered on the e-NAM portal. The platform has recorded a total trade volume of 12.03 crore metric tons, valued at around โ‚น4.39 lakh crores. This initiative aims to provide farmers with better market access and more competitive prices for their produce, thereby improving their overall income.

Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-KISAN) and Other Support Schemes

The Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-KISAN) scheme offers income support of โ‚น6,000 per year to all land-holding farmer families, distributed in three equal installments. As of June 30, 2025, benefits exceeding โ‚น3.69 lakh crores have been disbursed to eligible farmers. Additionally, the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY) addresses high premium rates for farmers, with over 78.41 crore applications enrolled and claims exceeding โ‚น1,83,259 crores paid out. These schemes, along with initiatives for credit access, technology support, and irrigation improvements, aim to create a more sustainable and productive agricultural landscape in India.
