Mastodon Introduces Quote Posts with Safeguards Against ‘Dunking’

Mastodon, the open-source and decentralized social media platform, is set to introduce a new feature next week that allows users to create quote posts. This functionality enables users to share someone else’s post along with their own commentary, a move that has sparked some debate due to its potential for fostering negative interactions reminiscent of those on X. In response to these concerns, Mastodon is implementing various safety controls to promote responsible use of this feature.
New Feature Aims to Enhance User Interaction
The introduction of quote posts on Mastodon is designed to encourage more engaging discussions and foster connections among users. The platform emphasizes that this feature aims to amplify underrepresented voices while allowing users to express their thoughts on others’ posts. However, the potential for misuse, such as “dunking” or mocking others, has led Mastodon to implement safety measures to mitigate these risks. The platform’s commitment to creating a respectful environment is evident in its approach to this new feature.
User Control Over Quote Posts
Mastodon provides users with several options to control how their posts can be quoted. Users can set permissions to determine who is allowed to quote their posts, with options including โAnyone,โ โFollowers only,โ or โJust me.โ Additionally, users can manage the visibility of their quote posts, choosing to make them public, visible only to followers, or set to a โquiet publicโ mode, which keeps them out of search results and public timelines. This level of control is intended to empower users, allowing them to navigate their interactions more safely and comfortably.
Post-by-Post Customization and Notifications
In a bid to enhance user experience, Mastodon allows individuals to customize their quoting settings on a post-by-post basis. This feature is particularly useful for users who may want to share something controversial or sensitive. Furthermore, when a post is quoted, the original poster receives a notification, giving them the option to remove their original content from the quote. Users can also adjust their future quoting settings or block individuals from quoting their posts altogether, providing an additional layer of control.
Gradual Rollout and Technical Considerations
The rollout of the quote post feature will begin next week, initially reaching larger Mastodon servers such as mastodon.online and mastodon.social. This feature will be part of the upcoming Mastodon 4.5 software update. Users will find the new quoting option under the Boost feature, which is similar to the repost or retweet functions on other platforms. However, due to the decentralized nature of the fediverse, the availability of quote posts may vary across different servers, and some platforms may take longer to implement the necessary technical specifications.
