Mammootty Reflects on His Role as Ambedkar

In a candid interview from 2000, Malayalam cinema icon Mammootty discussed his portrayal of Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar in the film of the same name. Directed by Jabbar Patel, the film marked a significant moment in Mammootty’s career as he ventured into Hindi cinema. Despite the film’s lackluster performance at the box office, Mammootty expressed pride in his interpretation of the revered leader, emphasizing the challenges and restrictions he faced in bringing the character to life.

Challenges of Portraying a Legend

Mammootty described the complexities involved in playing Dr. Ambedkar, a figure of immense respect and significance in Indian history. He noted, โ€œThere were lots of restrictions in playing Dr. Ambedkar. Since he was a much-revered real-life character, I had to play him correctly.โ€ The actor acknowledged that he had never met Ambedkar, which made the task even more daunting. He approached the role with an โ€œentirely imaginary interpretation,โ€ relying on his understanding of Ambedkar’s legacy rather than direct imitation. This creative freedom was a stark contrast to his experience in another project, where he felt he could express himself without limitations.

Reflections on the Film’s Reception

Despite the ambitious nature of the biopic, it did not perform well commercially. Mammootty remained philosophical about the film’s outcome, stating, โ€œItโ€™s all part of the game.โ€ He recognized the extensive time and effort he invested in the project, even sacrificing other opportunities. โ€œI let go of so many projects because of this film,โ€ he admitted. However, he found solace in the impact the film had on audiences who admired Dr. Ambedkar. Mammootty emphasized that the experience was worthwhile, as it allowed him to connect with fans and break into the Hindi film industry.

A Lasting Legacy and Personal Growth

Mammootty reflected on the personal significance of portraying Dr. Ambedkar, stating, โ€œItโ€™s because of Dr. Ambedkar that a person like you is talking to me.โ€ He expressed gratitude for the opportunity to touch the hearts of many who revere Ambedkar. The actor also noted that the role contributed to his recognition in the industry, leading to his third National Award. โ€œIโ€™ve my own way of looking at my projects. They may or may not click. But Iโ€™ve no regrets,โ€ he concluded, highlighting his commitment to his craft and the importance of artistic expression.
