Luke Coutinho Champions Nutrition at Anganwadi Centre

Renowned holistic health coach Luke Coutinho visited the Anganwadi Centre in Kusumpur Pahari, New Delhi, today to observe the implementation of the Poshan Abhiyaan initiative. This visit underscores the Government of India’s commitment to combating malnutrition through the Saksham Anganwadi and Mission Poshan 2.0 programs, which emphasize community participation and social behavioral change.
Engaging with Community Stakeholders
During his visit, Mr. Coutinho engaged with Anganwadi workers, who play a crucial role in enhancing nutrition and early childhood education within the community. He also interacted with the children at the centre, encouraging them to adopt healthy eating habits and lifestyle practices. His presence aimed to inspire both the workers and the children towards better nutrition, highlighting the importance of a balanced diet for overall well-being.
Mr. Coutinho’s visit coincided with the government’s ongoing efforts to improve nutritional services, particularly through the use of technology. He observed the ‘Poshan Tracker’ application, an innovative tool designed to monitor service delivery and infrastructure at Anganwadi Centres. This application, available in 24 languages, allows for near real-time data collection, enabling targeted interventions that enhance service efficiency for beneficiaries.
Promoting Healthy Lifestyles
During his interactions, Mr. Coutinho praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi‘s anti-obesity campaign and the initiative to reduce the use of edible oils in cooking. He emphasized the importance of community mobilization through annual events like Poshan Maah and Poshan Pakhwada, which are integral to the Poshan Abhiyaan. He also stressed the need for male involvement in family nutrition, advocating for a collective approach to fostering healthy eating habits.
Additionally, Mr. Coutinho commended the Ministry of Women and Child Development’s initiatives, such as incorporating millet into the Supplementary Nutrition Program and utilizing technology for real-time tracking of nutritional services. His visit aimed to reinforce the significance of these initiatives in addressing malnutrition and promoting healthier lifestyles among families.
Future Initiatives and Community Engagement
The Joint Secretary of the Ministry of Women and Child Development announced plans for the upcoming 7th Poshan Pakhwada, scheduled from March 18 to April 2, 2025. This year’s focus will be on promoting healthy lifestyles to combat childhood obesity, as well as emphasizing the first 1,000 days of life and the management of malnutrition through the implementation of the CMAM Module.
To further encourage the adoption of locally available foods, Mr. Coutinho planted a curry leaf sapling during his visit. This act symbolizes the importance of integrating local produce into daily diets for improved nutrition. The Joint Secretary also presented a copy of the ‘Poshan Utsav Book,’ a comprehensive resource developed by the Ministry, celebrating India’s rich culinary heritage and nutritional diversity.
Impact of the Visit
Mr. Coutinho’s visit is expected to enhance awareness about the significance of holistic nutrition and early childhood education. By engaging with community members and promoting healthy practices, the initiative aims to contribute to a healthier, better-nourished India. The collaborative efforts of stakeholders, including government agencies and health advocates, are crucial in achieving these goals and ensuring a brighter future for the nation’s children.
