Life-Saving Initiative for Children with Heart Defects
On Congenital Heart Defect Awareness Day, a significant partnership was formed to address a critical health issue affecting children in India. Central Coalfields Limited (CCL) and Northern Coalfields Limited (NCL), both subsidiaries of Coal India Limited (CIL), signed separate Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with the Sri Sathya Sai Health & Education Trust (SSSHET). This collaboration aims to provide life-saving surgeries for children suffering from Congenital Heart Disease (CHD) through the ‘Nanha Sa Dil’ initiative. The signing ceremony took place at Shastri Bhawan in New Delhi, marking a pivotal moment in the fight against this serious health condition.
A Commitment to Children’s Health
The MoUs were signed in the presence of key officials, including Secretary (Coal) Shri Vikram Dev Dutt and other dignitaries from the Ministry of Coal. Shri SS Lal, General Manager of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) at CCL, and Shri Rajeev Ranjan, GM (CSR) at NCL, represented their companies during the signing. Shri Vivek Gour, a Trustee of SSSHET, signed on behalf of the trust. This initiative reflects a strong commitment from CIL and its subsidiaries to enhance healthcare services in their operational areas, particularly for vulnerable families.
Shri Vikram Dev Dutt expressed his heartfelt appreciation for the initiative, stating that these MoUs would create goodwill for Coal India and its subsidiaries. He emphasized the importance of impactful CSR projects that promote sustainable and inclusive growth, especially in mining states. The initiative aims not only to provide immediate medical assistance but also to foster long-term health improvements in communities served by CIL.
The Nanha Sa Dil Initiative
The ‘Nanha Sa Dil’ initiative is a unique CSR program that leverages the expertise of SSSHET in pediatric cardiac surgeries. Under this initiative, CCL plans to screen 45,000 children in Jharkhand, with surgeries scheduled for 500 children diagnosed with CHD. Meanwhile, NCL will conduct 345 grassroots-level screening camps for 17,250 children. Those identified as needing further treatment will be referred to a dedicated diagnostic center at NCL Bina Hospital for Echo analysis and additional care.
Since its launch on March 7, 2024, the Nanha Sa Dil project has already saved over 250 lives through successful CHD surgeries. The initiative is expanding its reach, with plans to cover beneficiaries in more states through CCL, NCL, and SECL. This expansion signifies a growing commitment to addressing the healthcare needs of children across India.
A Vision for the Future
CIL and its subsidiaries have set an ambitious goal of saving over 2,000 lives in the next three years, marking a historic milestone for any Public Sector Unit in India. The CSR Department at CIL is dedicated to executing and monitoring these initiatives to ensure a lasting impact on society. Over the past three years, CIL and its subsidiaries have invested Rs. 1,673 crores in healthcare, education, and rural development. Notably, 90% of this expenditure is directed towards operational states, while 10% supports impactful projects across India aimed at uplifting underprivileged communities.
Currently, only 5% of the 240,000 children born with CHD in India receive the necessary surgeries due to prohibitive costs. Through the Nanha Sa Dil initiative, CIL is committed to bridging this gap and providing hope to countless families. This initiative not only contributes to nation-building but also offers the precious gift of life to children in need.
