Lebanon Independence Day 2024 Doodle

Todayโ€™s Doodle celebrates Lebanonโ€™s Independence Day! On this day in 1943, Lebanon finally gained its freedom and sovereignty after more than 20 years of foreign occupation.

Lebanon had been under a French mandate since 1920. On November 8th, 1943, members of the Lebanese parliament reworked the constitution to remove mentions of French authority โ€” essentially declaring their formal independence. Three days later, several leaders including Bechara El Khoury and Riad El Solh were arrested for this act. This sparked widespread protests and international criticism of France. The mounting pressure forced the French to release the leaders and formally recognize Lebanonโ€™s sovereignty.

On Independence Day, Lebanese people gather with family and friends to attend cultural events and lively festivities. The main celebrations occur in Beirut, where a grand parade takes place on the streets. Many also visit historical landmarks such as Rashaya Castle or Martyrsโ€™ Square. Throughout the country, citizens wave the national flag high in the sky โ€” like the one in todayโ€™s artwork โ€” with much Lebanese pride.ย

Happy Independence Day, Lebanon!
