Launch of Indigenous Fast Patrol Vessels
On January 5, 2025, the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) celebrated a significant milestone with the launch of two Fast Patrol Vessels (FPVs), named Amulya and Akshay. These vessels were indigenously designed and constructed by Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL). The event took place in Goa, attended by Secretary of Defence Production, Shri Sanjeev Kumar. This launch marks the third and fourth vessels in a series of eight FPVs being built by GSL for the ICG. The initiative highlights India’s commitment to self-reliance in defense production, aligning with the Aatmanirbharta vision.
A Milestone in Indigenous Shipbuilding
The launch of Amulya and Akshay represents a significant achievement for GSL and the ICG. Secretary Sanjeev Kumar praised the collaboration between the two organizations. He emphasized that the launch showcases the resilience and ingenuity of GSL, achieved through close cooperation with the Indian industry. The indigenous content of these vessels is a testament to the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative, which aims to boost local manufacturing and reduce dependence on foreign imports.
The Chief Guest at the event commended GSL’s team for meeting the shipbuilding needs of the ICG through indigenous efforts. He acknowledged the challenges faced during the construction process but urged everyone involved to maintain their focus on self-reliance in defense production. This commitment is crucial for India’s national security and economic growth.
Economic Impact and Growth Trajectory
During the event, CMD of GSL, Shri Brajesh Kumar Upadhyay, highlighted the shipyard’s impressive growth trajectory. He announced that GSL has achieved a remarkable 100% increase in gross revenue, surpassing the Rs 2,000 crore mark. This growth is not only a reflection of GSL’s capabilities but also of the broader economic impact of indigenous defense production.
The launch of these FPVs contributes significantly to local economic prosperity. It drives employment opportunities and fosters growth within the ecosystem of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) and local industries that support GSL. By investing in local resources and talent, GSL is helping to create a sustainable defense manufacturing sector in India.
Advanced Features and Operational Capabilities
The FPVs Amulya and Akshay are designed to meet the specific operational needs of the ICG. With a length of 52 meters and a displacement of 320 tonnes, these vessels will play a crucial role in protecting offshore assets and monitoring island territories. Their primary functions include fisheries protection, coastal patrol, and monitoring the exclusive economic zone. Additionally, they will engage in anti-smuggling, anti-piracy, and search and rescue operations.
For the first time in GSL’s history, these vessels were launched simultaneously using the shipyard’s state-of-the-art ship-lift system. This modern approach underscores GSL’s commitment to modernization and efficiency. Furthermore, this project is notable for being the first in India to feature a Fast Patrol Vessel built with a controllable pitch propeller, enhancing maneuverability and operational effectiveness.
