Kochi Water Metro Sparks Nationwide Transit Revolution

Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Shri Sarbananda Sonowal, recently assessed the operations of the Kochi Water Metro, a pioneering water-based transit system in India. His visit included a ride across key terminals in Kochi, aimed at evaluating the potential for similar projects in 24 cities nationwide, including Guwahati, Dibrugarh, and Tezpur in Assam. The Ministry has greenlit a Technical Feasibility Study to explore this innovative transport model further.

Shri Sonowal embarked on his journey aboard the Water Metro at the High Court Junction terminal, traveling to Fort Kochi and Vypeen. He was accompanied by senior officials, including Joint Secretary Sri Nath and representatives from Kochi Metro Rail Ltd. The minister’s ride showcased the operational efficiency and user-friendly design of the Water Metro, which aims to reduce traffic congestion and pollution while reconnecting communities with Indiaโs historic waterways.
