Khadi Exhibition Celebrates Indian Culture and Self-Reliance
The National-level Khadi Exhibition was inaugurated by Shri Manoj Kumar, the Chairman of the Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC), on Friday at the Mahakumbh in Prayagraj. This significant event took place at Sector-1, Mahatma Gandhi Marg, and will run until February 26. The exhibition features a total of 152 stalls, showcasing 98 stalls dedicated to Khadi products and 54 stalls representing various village industries. Dignitaries present at the inauguration included local MLA Shri Harsh Vardhan Vajpayee and Mayor Shri Ganesh Kesarwani, among others.
Celebrating Indian Heritage
The Khadi Exhibition is more than just a display of products; it is a celebration of Indian culture and heritage. During his address, Shri Manoj Kumar emphasized that the Mahakumbh is a festival of faith, symbolizing the rich traditions of India. He highlighted Khadi’s historical significance, noting that it became a symbol of self-reliance and Swadeshi under Mahatma Gandhi’s leadership. Today, under Prime Minister Narendra Modi‘s ‘Charkha Kranti’ initiative, Khadi has evolved into a representation of a self-reliant India.
The exhibition features products from over 20 states, ranging from Kashmir to Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra to Nagaland. This diversity showcases the unique craftsmanship and cultural richness of different regions. Shri Kumar encouraged pilgrims and visitors to explore the exhibition and support indigenous products, aligning with the ‘Vocal for Local’ initiative. By embracing local craftsmanship, visitors can contribute to the promotion of Indian culture and the empowerment of local artisans.
Economic Impact of Khadi and Village Industries
Shri Manoj Kumar shared impressive statistics that highlight the growth of Khadi and village industries over the past decade. The production of Khadi has surged from Rs. 26,000 crores to an astounding Rs. 1 lakh crores. Similarly, sales have risen from Rs. 31,000 crores to Rs. 1.55 lakh crores. This growth has not only boosted the economy but has also created significant employment opportunities.
Employment in the sector has increased by 43.65%, benefiting approximately 1.87 crore people. In the last financial year alone, 10.17 lakh new jobs were created. Additionally, the earnings of Khadi artisans have seen a remarkable rise of 213%, increasing from Rs. 4 to Rs. 12.50 per ‘lachha’ (thread bundle). These statistics underscore the positive impact of Khadi and village industries on the livelihoods of countless individuals and families across India.
Government Initiatives Supporting Khadi Growth
The government has implemented various initiatives to support the growth of Khadi and village industries. In Uttar Pradesh, more than 1.4 lakh artisans are employed through over 450 Khadi institutions. This financial year, the government has disbursed over Rs. 15 crore in MMDA and more than Rs. 4 crore in ISEC to support these artisans. Under the Gramodyog Vikas Yojana, 1,550 beneficiaries received tools and equipment last year, with a target of 1,850 beneficiaries for the current year.
Furthermore, the Prime Minister’s Employment Generation Programme (PMEGP) has played a crucial role in job creation. Subsidies worth Rs. 137 crore were disbursed in Uttar Pradesh until December, leading to the creation of 38,588 new jobs. Shri Manoj Kumar praised the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, stating that the ‘Khadi Revolution’ has significantly strengthened India’s rural economy. He also commended the organization of the Kumbh under Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, highlighting efforts to make Prayagraj a global spiritual hub.
