Key Infrastructure Projects Unveiled in NPG Meeting
The 88th meeting of the Network Planning Group (NPG) took place today, led by Shri E. Srinivas, Joint Secretary of the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT). The meeting focused on evaluating eleven significant infrastructure projects across the Road, Railway, Information Technology, and Metro sectors. These initiatives aim to enhance multimodal connectivity and logistics efficiency, aligning with the PM GatiShakti National Master Plan (PMGS NMP).
Evaluating Major Infrastructure Projects
During the meeting, the NPG assessed a total of eleven projects, which included seven road projects, two railway initiatives, one information technology project, and one metro project. Each project was evaluated for its adherence to the PM GatiShakti principles, which emphasize integrated multimodal infrastructure, last-mile connectivity, and intermodal coordination. The anticipated outcomes of these projects are expected to significantly improve logistical efficiency, reduce travel times, and provide substantial socio-economic benefits across various regions.
The projects under review include a range of developments aimed at enhancing connectivity and facilitating trade. For instance, the four-lane NH from Kishanganj to Bahadurganj in Bihar is designed to improve regional mobility and reduce congestion, while the Greenfield Regional Expressway from Girmapur to Choutuppal in Telangana will create a high-speed corridor linking key economic zones. These projects are part of a broader strategy to modernize India’s infrastructure and support economic growth.
Road Projects: Enhancing Connectivity
Several road projects were highlighted during the meeting, showcasing the government’s commitment to improving transportation networks. The four-lane NH from Kishanganj to Bahadurganj spans 23.649 km and aims to connect NH-27 and NH-327E, facilitating trade between Bihar and West Bengal. This project includes essential features such as flyovers, major bridges, service roads, and underpasses to ensure smooth vehicular movement.
Another significant initiative is the Northern Portion of the Hyderabad Regional Ring Road Expressway, which will connect Girmapur village to Choutuppal over a distance of 158.64 km. This expressway is designed to provide a high-speed corridor with grade separators and interchanges, enhancing access to economic nodes like SEZs and mega food parks.
Additionally, the six-lane connectivity road from Sabbavaram to Sheelanagar Junction in Visakhapatnam aims to ease congestion on NH-16, providing a dedicated corridor for port-bound traffic. This project will improve logistical operations for Visakhapatnam Port, ensuring efficient cargo evacuation.
Railway and IT Initiatives: Boosting Capacity
The NPG also reviewed critical railway projects aimed at enhancing capacity and connectivity. The new broad gauge line from Bhagalpur to Jamalpur, spanning 52.810 km, is expected to improve freight and passenger movement in Bihar’s Bhagalpur and Munger districts. This initiative will facilitate better connectivity between key locations, reducing congestion on existing railway lines.
Moreover, the proposed doubling of the Aurangabad-Parbhani railway line, covering 177.29 km, aims to decongest major corridors and provide an efficient alternative for freight and passenger transport. This project will benefit industries and tourism in the region, further supporting economic growth.
In the realm of information technology, the National Knowledge Network Phase-II was introduced as a high-speed network initiative to strengthen the infrastructure for research, education, and e-Governance. This network will ensure seamless connectivity for research institutions and government departments, enhancing access to vital data resources.
Metro Projects: Urban Mobility Improvements
The meeting also addressed urban mobility with the introduction of the GIFT City Metro Corridor in Gujarat. This project, spanning 7.585 km and implemented in two phases, aims to enhance urban mobility for the Gujarat International Finance Tec-City (GIFT). The metro corridor is expected to yield significant socio-economic benefits, including reduced travel times, lower fuel consumption, and decreased vehicular emissions.
These infrastructure projects reflect the government’s commitment to modernizing India’s transport and logistics networks, ultimately fostering economic development and improving the quality of life for citizens.
