The inauguration took place today, with prominent figures such as Union Minister for Education, Shri Dharmendra Pradhan, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, and Union Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting, Dr. L. Murugan, in attendance. This event aims to celebrate the deep-rooted connections between Tamil Nadu and Kashi, two of India’s most revered cultural hubs. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his joy over the event, emphasizing its importance amid the ongoing Mahakumbh at Prayagraj.
Celebrating Cultural Heritage
The Kashi Tamil Sangamam serves as a platform to celebrate the rich cultural heritage of India. In his address, Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan quoted a Tamil verse by Pandya King Parakrama Pandiyan, highlighting the sacredness of water and land in Bharat. He described Kashi as one of the oldest living cities and India’s cultural capital, while Tamil Nadu represents the heart of ancient wisdom and literary glory. Pradhan emphasized that the Tamil community has spread its culture worldwide, enriching lives wherever they go.
The event aims to bridge the traditions of North and South India, reinforcing the idea of “Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat.” This theme resonates with the vision of a united India, where cultural diversity is celebrated. The Kashi Tamil Sangamam not only showcases the beauty of India’s diverse culture but also fosters a deeper understanding among its people. The event’s theme this year revolves around Maharishi Agasthyar, a revered figure in both spiritual and intellectual traditions, further emphasizing the connection between Kashi and Tamil Nadu.
A Gathering of Minds and Cultures
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath welcomed delegates attending the Sangamam, expressing gratitude to Prime Minister Modi for organizing this significant event. He noted that the Sangamam coincides with the Mahakumbh, which has already attracted nearly 51 crore participants. Adityanath highlighted the event’s theme, which revolves around four key pillars: Sant Parampara, Scientists, Social Reformers, and Students. He underscored the importance of Sage Agastyar in strengthening the confluence of North and South India, as well as the connection between Sanskrit and Tamil.
The Kashi Tamil Sangamam aims to rediscover and celebrate the age-old links between Tamil Nadu and Kashi. Delegates will visit significant sites, including Mahakumbh and Shri Ayodhya Dham, to experience the divine connection between these two cultural powerhouses. This year, around 1,000 delegates from Tamil Nadu will participate, representing various groups, including students, farmers, professionals, and women. The event will last for eight days, with four days dedicated to travel and four days spent at the site.
Promoting Knowledge and Unity
Dr. L. Murugan, in his speech, emphasized the significance of the Kashi Tamil Sangamam in promoting the vision of “Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat.” He highlighted the historical connection between Kashi and Tamil Nadu, which spans over 5,000 years. This connection is documented in ancient texts such as the Ramayana and Mahabharata, as well as in Sangam literature. Dr. Murugan expressed gratitude to the Prime Minister for promoting the Tamil language and culture globally, mentioning ongoing efforts to establish Thiruvalluvar cultural centers.
The Kashi Tamil Sangamam aims to provide a platform for scholars, students, philosophers, traders, artisans, and artists from both regions to share knowledge and cultural practices. The event aligns with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which emphasizes integrating India’s rich knowledge systems with modern education.
