Karisma Kapoor’s Kids and the Rs 1,900 Crore Controversy: Priya Kapur Addresses Alleged Forged Will

The death of industrialist Sunjay Kapur has sparked a significant legal dispute over his substantial estate, valued at approximately Rs 30,000 crores. The matter has escalated to the Delhi High Court, where a conflict has emerged between Priya Kapur, Sunjay’s wife, and his children from his previous marriage to actress Karisma Kapoor. The children, Samaira and Kiaan, are contesting a will that allegedly favors Priya, claiming it is forged and questioning its legitimacy.
Legal Challenge Over Alleged Forged Will
Karisma Kapoor’s children, Samaira and Kiaan, have filed a petition challenging a will dated March 21, which purportedly bequeaths Sunjay Kapur’s entire estate to Priya Kapur. They assert that the will is a forgery, arguing that their father never mentioned such a document during his lifetime. Samaira, acting through her power of attorney, has taken the lead in this legal battle, while Kiaan, being a minor, is represented by Karisma as his guardian. The childrenโs legal representation, Advocate Mahesh Jethmalani, emphasized in court that Priya initially denied the existence of any will. However, it was later revealed during a family meeting on July 30. Jethmalani also pointed out that the will is unregistered and accused Priya’s associates of concealing it for over seven weeks.
Priya Kapur’s Defense
In response to the allegations, Priya Kapur, represented by senior advocate Rajiv Nayar, defended her position by asserting her legal status as Sunjay’s wife and widow. She highlighted the contentious history surrounding Sunjay’s divorce from Karisma, which was finalized in 2016, and questioned the validity of the children’s claims. Priya also noted that Karismaโs children had already inherited assets worth Rs 1,900 crores from the RK Family Trust, suggesting that their demands may be excessive. Her remarks included a pointed question: โI donโt know how much is enough,โ indicating her frustration with the ongoing dispute.
Court Proceedings and Next Steps
The case has drawn the attention of the Delhi High Court, where Justice Jyoti Singh is presiding over the proceedings. The court has instructed Priya to provide a comprehensive list of Sunjay’s movable and immovable assets as of June 12, the date of his passing. Sunjay Kapur tragically collapsed during a polo match in England, leading to his untimely death. The court has issued notices regarding the case and scheduled the next hearing for October 9, as the legal battle over the estate continues to unfold.
Implications of the Legal Battle
This legal dispute not only highlights the complexities surrounding inheritance and family dynamics but also raises questions about the validity of wills and the potential for familial discord following the death of a prominent figure. As the case progresses, it will be closely monitored by both the public and legal experts, given the significant financial stakes involved and the high-profile nature of the individuals involved. The outcome may set important precedents regarding estate disputes in India, particularly in cases involving high-net-worth individuals.
