Japanese Entrepreneur Thrives in India’s Startup Scene

Naotaka Nishiyama, the founder of Tech Japan, has shared his transformative experience of relocating to India, highlighting the profound impact it has had on his entrepreneurial journey. In a recent LinkedIn post, Nishiyama recounted his arrival in Bengaluru last March with just a suitcase and a vision. Over the past year, he has embraced the challenges of a new culture, gaining insights that have reshaped his approach to business and personal growth.

A New Beginning in Bengaluru

Reflecting on his journey, Nishiyama described his arrival in India as a leap into the unknown. He landed at Bangalore’s airport on March 26, 2023, feeling the weight of both excitement and uncertainty. “As I stepped out of the airport pulling my suitcase, I found myself standing in a completely new world,” he wrote. This move marked the beginning of a year filled with learning and adaptation.

As a Japanese startup founder in India, Nishiyama quickly recognized his uniqueness in a landscape dominated by corporate expatriates from industries like automotive and banking. He noted that interactions often led to questions about his affiliation with major Japanese companies. “When I meet someone for the first time, I’m often asked, Toyota? Suzuki? I smile and reply, no, I run a company called Talendy,” he shared, illustrating the curiosity surrounding his entrepreneurial path.

Lessons Learned from Change

Throughout the year, Nishiyama has gleaned valuable lessons that have transformed his business philosophy and personal mindset. He emphasized a significant shift in his approach: moving from “challenging myself within stability” to “creating value within change.” This new mindset has become integral to his identity as an entrepreneur.

In his post, he articulated three core lessons that have emerged from his experiences in India. Nishiyama expressed gratitude for the vibrant energy and ambition of the younger generation he has encountered, which fuels his belief in collaborative future-building. “Of course, I’m still learning… But the people I’ve met in India keep me moving forward with the belief that we can create the future together,” he concluded.

Community Response and Engagement

Nishiyama’s post has resonated widely, garnering over 400 comments and more than 7,000 reactions since its publication. Many users expressed their agreement with his observations about India’s diversity and the unpredictability it brings. One commenter noted, “You are 100% right, India is diverse which creates complexity and unpredictability. So life is not monotonous at any time.” This sentiment reflects the dynamic nature of life and business in India. Others highlighted the importance of adaptability and learning from each other’s cultures. Comments such as “Kudos to you for trying to embrace a country like India with so many imperfections unlike Japan” showcase the mutual respect and appreciation for cross-cultural experiences. Nishiyama’s journey serves as an inspiring example of how embracing change can lead to personal and professional growth.
