Jammu and Kashmir Boosts River Cruise Tourism

The Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) has signed a pivotal Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Government of Jammu and Kashmir to enhance river cruise tourism across three National Waterways in the region. The agreement was formalized during the Chintan Shivir event in Srinagar, attended by key government officials, including Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal. This initiative aims to stimulate economic growth, create jobs, and promote leisure tourism along the picturesque rivers of Jammu and Kashmir.
Strategic Collaboration for Tourism Growth
The MoU, signed in the presence of various dignitaries, marks a significant step in promoting cruise tourism in India. The IWAI has been actively working to develop this sector, and the partnership with Jammu and Kashmir is expected to provide a substantial boost. The agreement outlines plans for infrastructure development, including the construction of floating jetties and landside facilities, which will enhance the overall tourist experience. The initiative is part of a broader vision to create cruise circuits that connect various regions, from Kashmir to Kerala and Assam to Gujarat.
With three declared national waterwaysโRiver Chenab, River Jhelum, and River RaviโJammu and Kashmir is well-positioned to attract tourists seeking unique experiences on the water. The IWAI has earmarked approximately Rs 100 crore for the development of river cruise tourism in the Union Territory, signaling a strong commitment to this initiative.
Infrastructure Development Plans
Under the MoU, the IWAI will establish ten floating jetties and additional landside infrastructure, including waiting halls and amenities for cruise passengers. Specifically, two floating jetties will be located at Akhnoor and Reasi on the River Chenab, while seven will be situated at various points along the River Jhelum in Srinagar and Bandipora. Additionally, one jetty will be constructed at Sohar on the River Ravi.
The IWAI will also focus on enhancing navigational safety by executing dredging operations, providing navigational aids, and conducting regular hydrographic surveys. These measures are crucial for ensuring the safe operation of vessels in the waterways, thereby attracting more tourists to the region.
Government Support and Future Prospects
The Jammu and Kashmir government will play a vital role by providing land for the construction of facilities and facilitating necessary clearances. They will also appoint cruise operators to manage services on the national waterways. This collaborative effort aims to create a sustainable tourism model that benefits both visitors and local communities.
With the backing of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the leadership of Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, the IWAI is making significant strides in developing India’s waterways as a key driver of economic growth. The success of initiatives like the MV Ganga Vilas cruise highlights the potential of river tourism. The partnership with Jammu and Kashmir is poised to enhance local economies while promoting eco-friendly tourism practices.
This initiative not only promises to enrich the tourist experience but also aims to stimulate the local economy, making it a win-win for both the government and the communities involved.
